Q: I flew on Spirit from Florida to Puerto Rico. It was the best fare I found. Now, I receive periodic emails proclaiming rediculously low fares - such as $9 each way. I have not had the time to pursue the factualness of these claims. Is there anything to these low fares? What kinds of restrictions?
A: Yes, you can really book those fares, but typically there are only available on a few travel days (sometimes as few as 4 days in each direction). Sometimes it's hard to create a reasonable 7 to 10 day itinerary and get the $9 fare in both directions (you might need to stay a month, for example, to get $18 round trip), but you'll save money anyway.
Also, sometimes you need to be a member of Spirit's $9 Fare Club in order to get these deals. Airfarewatchdog joined the club in order to be able to test these fares, and we do indeed find they're available as long as you are flexible in your travel dates and book your seats as soon as the sale is announced.
The down side with Spirit is they are the "Fee Kings". They even charge you to sit down! Though, the last time we flew with them, we did not pre-select our seats and were able to avoid those fees. We also each packed a carry-on to get around the checked bag fees...... so we literally flew for the sale fare plus tax and airport fees.
You have to really keep your eye on the sales though. You need to open the emails as soon as you get them, and check to see if there are still sale fares, immediately..... or you will miss them. They only release a handfull of seats at this price...then the rest cost more, to compensate for the cost of the few they took a loss on.
Also just a FYI...... if you fly out of the country, even to Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands which are both Territories of the US....you pay an "international tax" that is about $100. But....that fee would be there whether you get a sale fare or not, so......
My advise....Don't give up...... keep looking. We have landed them 3 times. Most the time you miss them.....but they are there if you are dilligent about checking for them, time after time.
Being it caters to lots of "amateur" flyers, expect people with lots of luggage and long lines - altho now that they charge for luggage maybe that's not too bad
My guess is the check-in hassle is worse to undev. countries than to domestic destinations.
