The biggest new airline fees target surfers

Posted by Molly Feltner on Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Fees up, dude! As a recent LA Times article points out, surfers are now getting hit with what might be the biggest new airline fee yet: checked surfboard charges. While fees for checked bags are up across-the-board, some airlines are now charging flyers as much as $300 to check a surfboard. However, the airlines seem to let golfers off the hook, only applying regular first and second baggage fees to golf bags.

I just bought tickets for three people from TACA airlines because of the better prices and mainly board fees. We normally fly Delta out of Atlanta from Jax, Fl but their fees are out of control It almost cost as much to send boards as it does people. When you add up the fees for boards for a group, it does not make sense to charge this much, boards are lighter and easy to handle, unless of course it is a ten foot board, then I can understand some. Let's say four people, six boards, $150 per board each way, $1800 bucks, yikes.
