Another in our series examining credit card insurance when you fly (or take any trip via common carrier). Some credit cards offer pretty amazing free, built-in insurance. But others have almost nothing. Unfortunately for those carrying the Capital One Venture Rewards card, there's not much to talk about compared to cards like the Chase Sapphire Card or the United Chase Explorer Card, which offer trip interruption, delay, and cancellation insurance along with other protections.

Official contract

What's covered

On trips paid for entirely with the card, you are eligible to be reimbursed when your luggage (either checked bags or carry-on items) is lost by the carrier or stolen.

What's not covered

If you have any existing insurance that might cover the loss, you must file it first and show proof – this acts as supplemental coverage only. A long list of uncovered items applies, from cellphones to contact lenses and much more. This insurance probably is most valuable for international travel, where airline reimbursement is much less than for domestic U.S. travel.

Maximum benefit

$3,000
