Flight from PDX to SFO was uneventful (that was actually a United flight). After that it was terrible. On the way to Newark, there was a gas leak in the New York traffic control center and it was evacuated. After circling in the Cleveland area we were sent to Cleveland because we did not have enough fuel on board to make it to Newark. When we got to Newark, out plane had been let go and we got stuck in Newark for the night. No apology or offer to put us up for the night from Continental. Had to get up the next morning at 0430 to make our flight to Rochester. This after we got to bed at 0100. On the 5 segments of this trip (PDX - SFO - Newark - ROC/Roc - Newark - PDX) we had to check our carry on baggage (other than a small purse or fanny pack)on 4 segments because Continental was allowing some people to take on 3 and 4 items and we were last on the plane because our seats were right behind first class and the bins were full by the time we got on. They made us check luggage at the plane door. On 2 of the segments there WAS room to put a lot more bags in the overhead compartments. Continental was very inconsistent in their baggage handling rules - what they allowed people to bring on. One lady had 3 items and she was told she could only have 2. She stuffed the third item into a second bag and that made it bigger than her first bag and they let her board with basically 2 large items. I saw people get on with 3 and 4 items several times. These were flights from hell. 2 of the segments there was barely any air coming from the fresh air vents. Was hot inside the plane to the point I had perspiration on my forehead. Told the stewardesses and nothing was done. I will NEVER fly United/Continental again. I am a member of 4 other frequent flyer programs and I will give them my business. How sad that some of the airlines have digressed to having pathetic customer service!
