When we boarded the plan in Phoenix around 5:30 the smell of an outhouse (strong) immediately greeted us. As we sat on the plane it became stronger. Especially if you sat by a window and the air was on , the smell was sickening. The entire plane complained of the smell. Very strong with ammonia and waste. Whn the plane was in flight the smell subsided some, by when we landed and waited to deplane, the smell again was obnoxious. We were told the plane was being taken off the line to find out what was wrong...however I think it was obvious that the holding tanks for the bathroom waste had not benn emptied. In addition, we were told that the plane had sat at the terminal all night. My husband and I aboth had headaches( and disgust) for the rest of the day. It was very unpleasant. If Delta cuts cost in such a manner..what else in maintenance is being cut? My confidence in flying Delta is not stellar!
