I haven't flown on Southwest for over a decade because they don't serve where I live -- and I prefer to collect miles on airlines with international redemption opportunities. As a frequent flyer on one of the legacy carriers, I was concerned about what I was getting into.
I discovered that I could check in online and secure a good boarding position so that I could choose a good seat. (The plane was packed with only 11 open middle seats, so it made a difference being able to board early.)
I was pleased that there was not the usual hassles of jockeying for overhead space. I suspect that because Southwest doesn't charge for baggage, more people check bags. Therefore, there are fewer carry-ons fighting for available space. And most carry-ons are smaller so that people get seated more rapidly -- accounting for Southwest's ability to turn planes around faster than other airlines.
The cabin crew seemed upbeat and hospitable.
I was surprised that they handed out free peanuts.
We left and arrived about 15 minutes late because the inbound equipment arrived late.
