Take a soft sided carry on. Late boarders can stuff it into an overhead where a hardsided bag doesn't fit.

Check in was slow, due to another flight being cancelled and other people trying to find a flight. Were assigned seats in the last row by the engines, loud, and no window. Flight itself was good, no problems. It was hard to understand pilot on loud speaker. It bites that everyone carrys on to avoid paying to check bags. :(

the flight left on time and arrived on time. We did have to wait about 15 minutes for a gate, there was plane still in our gate. Cabin service was fine and there is never enough leg room.
All airlines need to do something about all the carry on's. Some people had 3 items and some of them were rather large, it takes forever for people to get their items stowed.
