Our Family(4) Lost All Our Miles

In Oct. 2012, I made airline reservations with AA through their website for myself and 5 other family members—i.e. 6 reservations all together. I paid for all 6 tickets($2,356.00 total). My family and I were going to visit family over the 2012 Christmas holidays. Four(4) of the travelers were members of AA’s frequent flyers club AAdvantage, and 2 were not. Since I made all the reservations through AA’s website, I noted the total miles already accrued for each of the 4 travelers that were AAdvantage members: I,had accrued 35,423 miles; my wife had accrued 37,912 miles; my son had accrued 37,895 miles; & my other son had accrued 37,912 miles. By the way, all 4 of us had been AAdvantage members since 1999.

In late Dec. 2012, the day before we were to travel, I went on AA’s website to print out boarding passes. I noticed that on Nov. 30, 2012 all the miles for all 4 of us had been deleted supposedly because they had expired. In other words, we all had Zero(0) miles at that point. None of us had been notified in any way that our miles were about to expire. I had been very ill over the last year or two, and thus we hadn’t traveled at all. But, now I was better, and we decided to travel over the holidays, and loyally we returned to AA. Well, my wife immediately called AA(800-433-7300) and talked to someone named Pam in Dallas and her supervisor Emry(female) also in Dallas. My wife explained the situation to them(my illness) and asked them that since we made our reservations in Oct. 2012, well before the Nov. 30th expiration date, didn’t that “reset the expiration clock” in Oct. 2012? She was told no, that in spite of the fact that we’d spent $2,356.00 with AA in Oct. 2012, “the clock wouldn’t reset” until we actually traveled at the end of Dec. 2012. So, the Nov 30th expiration date stands and we had all lost all of our miles. My wife asked them couldn’t they just re-instate all our miles as a courtesy to long time loyal AAdvantage members. She was told no, but they would re-instate the miles for $30.00 per person, in other words $120.00 total. So, we had just spent $2,356.00 with them, and they wanted to extort another $120.00 from us—WHAT NERVE!!!! We declined their offer to be “nickeled & dimed” some more! So, beware of American Airlines!

The seats on the 3 hour trip were terrible! Hard as a rock, no padding. My husband could hardly walk when we got off.
