Airlines Don't Share Lowest Fares with Everyone

Posted by Peter Thornton on Friday, November 4, 2011

While searching for some peak Thanksgiving holiday travel today, we ran into a classic case of an airline not sharing it's lowest fare with all airfare search engines.  Therefore, the famous "search one and done" slogan which Kayak boasts doesn't always ring true.  Truth is, airfares oftentimes vary from site to site.  In this example, we see two searches side by side taken from screenshots at around 1:00pm ET Nov. 4, 2011.  We see Kayak giving us the lowest fare from New York to Bermuda departing Nov. 23 and returning Nov. 27 at $595 on American.  However, Priceline is also showing us that same routing and same dates with a JetBlue flight at $572.  It is always best to search at least a few different websites when searching for the best airfare.

looking for low price airfares for Seniors

I've checked the same fare on Kayak numerous times over 2 days and it gives me the same result as Rob. This holds true for the ITA website as well. I think its because the ITA software doesn't update quickly enough and as a result, all the websites using the same software have the same delay. I've never tried Priceline so I can't say if they have the same problem.

Rob, that sometimes happens because there was one seat at the lowest fare and then someone else grabbed it between search and booking. In this case, the lowest fare wasn't even shown on Kayak. It seems that JetBlue isn't offering all of its fares (or any fares?) on Kayak for whatever reason

This is half the story. I've seen many instances of a lower fare displayed and then when you're just about to book and pay with credit card, it reverts to the higher amount from other websites. Something like: "there has been a change to fare you're trying to book. The new price is: $$$." Happens to me all the time. Almost as if the fares displayed are "stale" and were true as of earlier that morning, or the day before, but now that the software has a chance to refresh and actually book the remaining seats in inventory the price is different. I'm curious to know if the author actually went through to the final purchase screens (short of actually purchasing) and got the same price.
