Book the wrong flight? Some airlines will let you off the hook

Posted by A Tam on Wednesday, August 19, 2009

Just booked a non-refundable fare and immediately realize you booked the wrong dates or the wrong city? Or simply decide that you don't want to attend Aunt Freda's annual bingo marathon after all?  Depending on the airline or online travel agency you bought from, you might be able to cancel and get a full refund if you do so within a certain time. But it might take some work and some airfare vendors are more frustrating to deal with than others.

In general, if the airline you are booked with has a no-penalty cancellation policy you must cancel within 24 hours of purchase, or else regular change fees will apply. Many major U.S. based carriers offer a 24-hour grace period and let you get a refund for no fee. The only exceptions are American Airlines and Air Tran. Continental and Northwest/Delta make it super easy to cancel fee-free with just a few mouse clicks. If your ticket is not on either of those airlines you will have to be patient and spend some time on the phone.

If you've bought from an online travel site such as Expedia or Priceline, you'll have to be even more patient. Last week we received an email from a reader about her experience trying to cancel a ticket booked on Priceline, and in short she wasn't able to reach a representative in time and was stuck with a ticket she no longer needed. Under Priceline's rules, if you phone them by 11:30 p.m. ET on the day that you book, you can get a full refund. But as our reader discovered, it's easier said than done. If you can't get through by phone send them an email or better yet you might have luck calling the airline directly to see if they can do anything.

Another option is to put your fare on a "courtesy hold". American and US Air offer a 24-hour hold, and although this is allows you to double check your reservation, if the fare goes up meantime you'll have to pay the higher price.

Here are the refund policies for some major U.S. based carriers and online travel agencies:

Continental 24 Hours Online or Phone Refund Policy
Northwest 24 Hours Online Customer's First
Delta 24 Hours Online Customer Commitment

I accidentally booked the wrong date with Jetblue, but immediately called right after I saw the comment on here. They were able to change my flight without the fee. I was really thankful for the lady for picked up the phone and took care of this for me so early in the morning. Great customer service. Just gotta check everything before you confirm the flight next time =)

Sorry, that's 11:59 PM PT in both cases (which is 3:59 AM ET!). AS until recently had the industry's best same-day standby rules, but those have gone away. It's still only $25 to change to a different flight on the day of departure, however.

You missed Alaska Airlines. Until recently, they allowed a full hold until 11:59 PT the following day (timed right, this allowed up to 47 hours and 59 minutes of a hold). The price was guaranteed, unlike US and AA. They recently dropped that in favor of allowing you to cancel until 11:59 PT the day after booking (still up to 47:59 if you buy your ticket at 12:00 AM PT). Cancellations can be done online. It's still probably the best policy of any of the network carriers.

Got the am/pm mixed up on a Continental fly, didn't realize it till I tried to check in online. Called and talked to agent who checked for available seating for am flight. I was told to go to airport early and get on stand by list. It all worked out smoothly! Thanks Continental!

If you get a nice person, there are always exceptions to the rules. If you don't get a nice person, try calling back!

I inadvertently booked the wrong date on a Spirit flight. I phoned them about a half hour later and a really nice woman rebooked my flight for me and when I asked how much it would be, she said "We'll let you off this time!". I was floored. Whatever people say about Spirit, and we have all heard plenty of bad stuff, this was terrific customer relations and greatly appreciated! Ten out of ten, Spirit!

I actually booked the wrong date on jetblue.com and was able to change my date fee-free, but I called within 15 minutes of booking the ticket.
