American Airlines raises checked bag fee by $5

Posted by George Hobica on Saturday, July 25, 2009

Effective for tickets bought on or after Aug 14, you'll pay $20 for the first bag and $30 for the second, unless you're exempt by frequent flyer status, military duty, or class of service. Other airlines recently raised their fees by $5, but allowed a discount if you paid the fee online. American is raising its fees, period.

I thought the reason the check bag fee was initiated was because of fuel costs??? If that is not why then WHY??

I was planning a trip on American when this fee increase was announced. I had already researched flights. I change my destination to use Southwest and avoid the excessive fee gouging.
We should be e-mailing and letting the airlines know we won't stand for this treatment, and then boycott or defer flying.

With a bit of planning, you can UPS or Fed Ex your bags to your destination without the hastle AND a "thank you for your business" :-)

I agree with Rickartc, I am pretty much going to stop flying. It's already hard enough to get through the gauntlet of parking, gettting into the terminal, checking in, and overblown "security". Now add insult to injury, fees up the wazoo. Time to start considering just driving to destinations if possible. I've had enough of the endless hassles and fees that will never go away once instituted (just like taxes). Once the fees are in place, they will be permanent. And fares never go down either, to compensate. Enough is enough. Time to boycott air travel. Airlines seem to think they can do whatever with us, from surly service, to poor baggage handling, now endless fees. ENOUGH!
