Airline baggage fees chart

Posted by George Hobica on Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Here we list, airline by airline, fees for checked bags on major US airlines. These fees are for domestic economy class travel (which in some cases includes Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Canada) only and may be higher on international flights.

There are all kinds of exceptions to these fees, especially for certain classes of frequent flyers and military personnel. These fees are cumulative and are double for round-trip travel. They are subject to change and were accurate to the best of our knowledge as of Aug 12, 2009.

If you're a heavy packer, you'll want to fly with Airtran, Alaska, Frontier and Southwest, even if there's a cheaper fare on another ailrine.

This is the tipping point--since we can't carry-on clothes and skis, it's cheaper to drive, and the airlines will get nothing at all from us. They're just greedy.

I think this is just a way for the airlines to sell ticket low then add all the fees on. So totally you will pay more.

I always try to fly with Southwest. They seem to have the lowest fees in terms of the baggage. Once I even tries to take my wedding cake (http://weddingcakecreations.com) with me on the flight and the crew was very helpful to me and they tried to do their very best to preserver my wedding cake and they were nice enough to take a wedding cake picture (http://weddingcakecreations.com) with me and add even more great memories to my wedding experience.

I can't understand why some airlines charge exorbitant baggage fees, while others charge far less. Can't it be regulated so they charge uniform fees?

Are golf bags still exempt for the oversize luggage weights? I believe the policy for most airlines is still one golf bag per customer, but with cost cutting recently I don't see that lasting especially for Economy tickets.

Does Northwest have routes to Europe? Delta is so heartless, that they even charge the second bag on international flights to Europe, and with a whopping $50. That's $100 round trip! Leeches!

Nice list, but I hope it would have been excellent to include international economy class travels as well.

the REALLY funny thing is: when the price of fuel went up the airlines said that was the reason the charges for baggage happened, but they sure didnt lower or eliminate those charges when the price of fuel went down. Nother indication about what crooks they all are, from the top dog (CEO) to the lowest member of the food chain at the airlines. They may be as bad or worse than ALL the politicians, bar none, in this country, CROOKS every last one of them.

I don't understand why some airlines just charge some unnecessary large amount of money for baggage.
