Airline baggage fees chart, updated

Posted by George Hobica on Monday, February 15, 2010

Here we list, airline by airline, fees for checked bags on major US airlines. These fees are for domestic economy class travel (which in some cases includes Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Canada) only and may be higher on international flights.

There are all kinds of exceptions to these fees, especially for certain classes of frequent flyers and military personnel. These fees are cumulative and are double for round-trip travel. They are subject to change and were accurate to the best of our knowledge as of Feb 17, 2010.

If you're a heavy packer, you'll want to fly with Airtran, Alaska, Frontier and Southwest, even if there's a cheaper fare on another ailrine.

The baggage fees are rediculous, this needs to stop. We should at the least be able to check one bag without charge.

We are considering limiting luggage, by buying what we need when we get to our destination then donating it to a charity. With the economy the way it is, its cheap to buy clothes and then give away. It's a lot easier on the back while trying to move luggage as well. This way, we win, charities win and the airlines don't.

I work for Frontier Airlines and would like to note that the prices listed above are incorrect. The charge for the first checked bag is $20 and for the second checked bag is $30. Don't want people to be misinformed

I'm with all the rest. Been flying Delta forever, not any more - gonna use my skymiles, take my free flight, then DONE with Delta. Way to go. Thank goodness for competition. Spread the word. Hellooo Jet Blue.

You didn't mention that with Spirit is charged per bag per leg of the trip. If you have a layover you can count on two baggage fees each way.

Thanks, this is helpful. but what? No Hawaiian Airlines? Hawaii is still domestic, still the USA ya know? :) I'm leaving on a trip in 3 weeks and was wondering what surprises I might be in for.
