Airline baggage fees chart, updated

Posted by George Hobica on Tuesday, June 7, 2011

Here we list, airline by airline, fees for checked bags on major US airlines. These fees are for domestic economy class travel (which in some cases includes Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Canada) only and may be higher on international flights.

There are all kinds of exceptions to these fees, especially for certain classes of frequent flyers and military personnel. These fees are cumulative and are double for round-trip travel. They are subject to change and were accurate to the best of our knowledge as of June 7, 2011.

If you're a heavy packer, you'll want to fly with Airtran, Alaska, Frontier and Southwest, even if there's a cheaper fare on another ailrine.

Effective March 9, 2011, United increased overweight and oversized bag fees, especially for international travel; US Airways increased fees in February for oversized and overweight bags. Another item of note: many airlines used to charge a small fortune for bags over 70 lbs., but now they don't allow them as checked baggage. Instead, you'll have to ship as cargo, which really costs a larger fortune. Effective May 31, 2011, Delta, Continental and United increased the second checked bag fee for trans-Atlantic travel.

On the plus side, some fees for excess bags (such as 5 or more) have been decreased slightly on some airlines. But who checks 5 bags?

We bought tickets on DELTA with a non-stop from Kansas City to New Orleans. Imagine our surprise when they canceled the direct flight leaving at 8:30am and replaced it with one leaving at 6:10am and connecting in Memphis. It took them 3 days after the change before we got a notification. We know they can do this according to the fine print in the contract, but it's very bad customer service!
by KC flier on Tuesday, January 31, 2012
I can't believe how inefficient customer service for delta is. We are going to China for 3 years, so we want to take advantage of our luggage allowance. On the website it says to ASIA we are allowed only 1 free suitcase. However I spoke to Sharice and Greta and customer service who said China is not included in "Asia" and according to their chart, we are permitted 2 free luggages. Obviously I don't want to us to be stuck at the airport, so I wanted it in writing that we were in fact permitted 2. Got disconnected BOTH TIMES. Then I spoke to Wendy, and even though she didn't tell me what I wanted to hear, she said the website is right and that we are only allowed 1. Called again this morning and was told we get NO free luggage. What MORANS. How many flights a day leave the US to China & and no one can give me a clear cut answer? Really? You pay $1500/ticket and that can't simply write on the ticket YOU ARE PERMITTED X FREE LUGGAGES. Seriously?
by GOIN2CHINA on Monday, January 30, 2012
Being only the 2nd time I have ever been on a plane I never even thought to check bag rates I guess I just assumed ur carry on was free do I book a flight that seemed as a great deal but they deff got me in my one bag! SPIRT will NEVER get my business again $38 at gate for a checked bag and $40 for a carry on. Lesson learned I'll never use them again
by Camtyes on Sunday, January 22, 2012
wow, someone is smoking crack at Spirit Airlines! $30 for a carry on!!! and $28 for a checked bag!! Who is flying with these idiots!
by Malia on Friday, January 13, 2012
We booked a non-stop flight to New York City on Delta and now they notified us that we have to stop in St. Paul/Minneapolis. How can they just change your ticket like this when you've already booked it! We would have gone with Jetblue as they don't charge for the first checked in bag but they didn't have any non-stop flights from Portland, OR.
by NYC Kid on Thursday, January 12, 2012
It is so sad that merger decrease competition and decrease level of services. We have been traveling to Asia yearly thru Continental for the past 1+ decade. The company has adopted the United corporate greed policy for imposing second baggage fee. A family of 4, has to put in $280 for second bag. In addition, they increased the fare for my usual route and I have to stop over at EWR(overnight) and NRT. The oil has been around 100/barrel. To me, this is an example of corporate GREED.

by jack marton on Wednesday, January 04, 2012
If I am not mistaken, checked through fees are determined by the airline on which the first leg of ones journey takes place. This means that if going to Europe from a western destination, it pays to fly an airline like Southwest to the international portal city. However, I am unable to find out what happens when one returns. One can pay baggage fees online, but which airlines rules apply on the homeward leg?
by traveler on Friday, December 09, 2011
I just want to make a comment on a proposed law that would require airlines to allow one free checked bag, and on airline policies. I believe the law proposal is unnecessary, and wrong. First of all, free markets will work out these things by itself. Second, I understand that transporting and handling luggage costs the airlines money, so charge for it! And why - as a frequent daytrip and carry-on only traveler - should I pay for someone else's luggage to be handled and transported? On the flipside, I do have a problem with airlines who charge for checked luggage, and then do NOT enforce their carry-on policies. Every flight I am on, passengers are allowed to carry on luggage that does not meet the sized-right standard, passengers are allowed to carry on 2 pieces of luggage, and are allowed to place their purse or computer bag or jackets in the overhead bins instead of under the seat in front of them. As a result, on numerous flights, I had to give up my (properly sized) carry-on luggage because there was no more overhead space available. Since this behavior could (or really should) have been expected, the airlines really need to start enforcing their carry-on policies. It may cause some inconsiderate passengers to be unhappy, but why should I as a rule obeying passenger suffer because the airline allows other passengers to break the rules?
by Burt on Tuesday, November 22, 2011
I flew recently and, from what I could tell, I was pretty much the only person who checked my luggage. I was annoyed that checked baggage now costs so much money and seems to be unfairly priced*. When I got on the flight, I saw the direct result of these airline policies and was glad I checked my bag as I had less hassle. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, was checking their bag at the gate for "free" (getting a tag didn't seem to cost money), which seemed to create a lot of unnecessary hassle for the airline staff at the gate. Everyone on board was attempting to shove their luggage into the limited overhead storage bins - luggage they would have likely had checked. Basically, the airlines have created a huge, unnecessary headache for themselves and all their customers with these checked baggage fees. I also now have to mentally calculate the cost of checked baggage into ticket pricing on the various websites, which makes it that much harder to fly. The airlines should be finding ways to make it EASIER to fly, not harder. * If weight is the real concern, a better approach would be to weigh the passenger WITH their luggage and then charge fees based on that combination (and maybe return part of the ticket cost if the weight is below some threshold). That seems fair to me and would encourage everyone to maintain a healthy weight. As it is, the current system of fees punishes those who maintain a healthy lifestyle and do the right thing with their luggage.

by wwjogapr on Thursday, October 13, 2011
I try to fly Southwest as many folks that have posted have mentioned. But they are not without their fees as well. If you want a shot at a decent seat and/or overhead bin space you have to book as early as you can and pay the $10 earlybird fee...but at least it is a voluntary fee (and totally worth it IMHO) I once did not have a chance to check myself in before going to the airport. And the only seat available was literally between 2 linebackers. Thank goodness it was only an hour flight!

Traveled on South African Airways March, 2011. They booked us from Chicago to Washington DC on United to get the SAA flight. United tried to get us to pay for baggage on their flight because they claimed that it was their policy. I had to call South African Airways while in the airport to get them to tell the United supervisor that they (SAA) booked me on this flight so actually I was flying SAA all the way and I could take up to two bags for free because it was an international flight. After an hour and a lot of talking between SAA and United, United was directed to their OWN WEBSITE and had to follow the directions from SAA to find the section that explained this. We got the fees waived!!!

I just took Virgin and took a carry on. Once ready to board I was told my bag was too big and needed to check it in and I was not charged a fee :) however a man behind me his bag was larger then mine and they made him pay for his luggage on the spot. I normally fly southwest because of no fees for bags however I almost lost mine going to NY this past week.. luckily I got it back :)and found southwest does not have great customer service! I am disgusted with all these extra fees. This has to stop. I agree with a below comment they are flying there anyways!
by bagsFLYFREE on Friday, September 16, 2011
Charging for the first bag is pure greed, with the economy has it is, these corporation have no compasion, has long has they line their pocket, they have collected billions of dollars over the back of people, and their is no one to stop this abuse it's just outrageous.

just flew back from Medford Or, Sept.8 with just one agent at the counter time was very short to get onto the plane by departure time. The agent weight my bag which is average size 24x18x12 and announced that it was overweight, therefore $100.00 charge and told me to hurry up to catch the plane as it was departure time and I still had to go through security. Did I have time to find out what the overweight was? No. Just had to hand him my credit card. My guess would be maybe 3lbs. Very disgusted with the whole incident. I will try to get a refund.

I recently flew to Denver from Chicago. My mian problem has been the 3-1-1 rules. I found a company that will hold those items for you and forward to your destination. Now all I travel with is clothes and electronics. Can carry that on.

Ok, I have you all beat. I flew from PHL to Cairo on Delta. Business class. It was a business trip. I am Silver FF. I had 3 bags. Business stuff. Paid $50 for the second bag, $100 for the second bag and 200 over weight fee. Business stuff. On the way back from Cairo, I was charge $600 cash (yes cash!!), for my carry on luggage to Greece on Olympic Airlines. I was charge another $450 on the way back to PHL. Ouch! Zen
by Zen on Thursday, September 08, 2011
It's great to see that some fees were dropped to get the most affortable air fare deals (http://traveldealsblog.co.uk) but majority of the airlines increased their baggage allowance cost.

Just flew from US to England on United and couldn't be more pleased. Checked two bags at no cost, they provided decent meals for free, padded headphones for free, and a choice of a dozen movies to watch. Go figure.
by IDK on Wednesday, September 07, 2011
Kudos to Southwest and JetBlue for continuing to provide old fashioned value rather than gimmicks. You'll always be my first choice. The airlines that charge for baggage - I'm seeing more delayed flights as people try to cram their baggage into overhead compartments...

by Barbiedawl on Friday, September 02, 2011
I travel often to the States from South America on American Airlines, I just found out that they now are charging $ 30 for the second bag each way it is outrageous, the tickets are always between $1.000 to $ 1.500 economy class so it is not cheap at all. Why they do that?? They make lots of money with all the surcharges we have to pay so why we the passengers have to pay for everything? Is there any law about this? Or they can keep doing stuff like this as they want and without prior notice? Is there something that we the people can do about it? it makes me sick every time I fly to notice a lot of employee's family members and friends that travel for free ( one of the benefits when you work in an airline) always in business class, instead of offering an upgrade to a paying passenger they usually gave the best seats to family and friends and they don't pay for bags they are also free, so I'm wondering instead of charging for everything to the paying passengers they should stop giving away so many tickets and also made them pay, they would make lots of profit, you will be surprise if you know how many free tickets are giving away every year and maybe we the people that always pay can get a break of all this airline abuse.
by alec on Tuesday, August 30, 2011
I noticed Southwest's government fees and taxes are twice that of Delta's going to and from Seattle. Why would that be?
by LucynLou on Tuesday, August 30, 2011
Charging for a bag is ridiculous. I try not to fly on any airline that charges for a bag. I weigh 105 lb - and have to pay for $50 bag. I 250 lb person pays the same. Does not make sense to me if it's all about the extra weight on the plane.
by lynn on Saturday, August 27, 2011
I don't understand, you get a nice low fare price, but pay for baggage. Why do airlines charge for baggage. sometimes ends up higher than the fare.
by jetsetter on Thursday, August 25, 2011
four passenger with tickets on Air canada. Only three bags checked, tow were slightly over weight by three pounds, one was under by almost ten pounds. They asked for 200 CAD for two overweight bags even though there was one bag less than eligible! Some airlines are in a league of their own
by zarno on Friday, August 19, 2011
Charges for checked bags result in more carry-on bags, which result in longer TSA lines, in turn resulting in higher costs for TSA. I read that the TSA is considering ways to offset their costs, which of course will be passed along to flyers. If only there were a payoff to checking bags-- a ticket to a special TSA line, for example.
by todianew on Thursday, August 18, 2011
According to the Delta website, for travel between US and Europe, you are allowed 1 checked bag. The second one is $60 if checked in online or $75 at the airport. Your chart says they give two free bags. The only people who get that are Medallions.

Southwest weight limit is 50 lbs. per bag. I read that they charge for skis. Is this something new? Last time I flew my skis on Southwest they flew free. I think its time to start a petition to get Southwest to start international travel and to add Atlanta and Hawaii to their itinerary. I would love it if I never flew any other American based airline. I absolutelty agree with what everyone here said, even if they were contradictory. My gripe is the last 2 time I flew Continental Airlines from SFO to Houston I was treated as if I was a steer on the way to slaughter. Not all but most Continental employees were rude and had an attitude. The 1st time I flew I was in a middle seat and the woman next to me on the isle seat was about twice the width of an oversized offensive lineman. The stewardess raised the arm rest so my neighbor could spread onto almost 1/2 of my seat. I had to sit scrunched up on the apprx. 5 hr flight and told the stewardess I cannot even buckle my seat belt and she just ignored me the entire flight. Then they lost my luggage and I had to wait 3 1/2 hrs. for my shuttle to Hobby Airport. It was so late with only minmal staff the person whom handled lost luggage didn`t have the forms for me and finally caught my shuttle with no official claim form. After 4 days without my clothes an employee said to buy what I needed and they would reimburse me. Never happened nor did I get the promised free due to the 3 1/2 hr shuttle delay upgrade. I flew to Ukraine on KLM in 2009 and they know how to run an airline and treat passengers as we`re supposed to be treated, we`re paying their salaries and they realize it.

US Airways probably the worst for the nickel and dime routine. They tried to get me for $17 per seat to get seats together with my wife. They take discover card in JAX for extra bag and then can't take discover for return flight from Cancun. They suggest I use the ATM for pesos further fees for ATM and stupid exchange fees. Then my bag arrives damaged. Jet Blue will be my prefered carrier on my next vacation.
by dog5654 on Wednesday, July 13, 2011
Southwest you will be my preferred airline from now on with your $0 baggage fee! I have a bitter taste in my mouth from these baggage fees in the past month. Sent daughters on trip (20 & 19) by themselves. Paid USAir $100 for bags to and from. One bag on the trip there was 59lbs which amounted to an additional $90 for that one bag. That is $10/lb extra, very exorbinate. This is a total sham. Few weeks later family of 5 took a trip to caribbean. 5 bags, $125 one way so $250 round trip. To add insult to this they lost 1 bag on the return. So out a bag with daughters clothes for 3 days. In one month paid USAir $440 for luggage, had to wait on the multitudes of passengers in security that felt the need to carry on luggage, overhead crammed with luggage, about hit on the head because passengers can't get their luggage lifted into the overhead, delayed waiting on people getting luggage in and out of the aircraft. Very annoyed! Next trip will be on Southwest or in my own car. No more international trips for us or on an airline that charges for bags.
by Peterson5 on Sunday, July 10, 2011
All airlines really do is rip people off. If you don't believe me, chack out what some of the CEO's make. They want you to check a second bag.
by cradle4 on Friday, July 08, 2011
Don't fly - drive if possible; take cruise and enjoy life. Business people can contunie flying as the company pays for their trip. Combine business trip to personal vacation as air is paid by the company if not two ways one way at least. However, there is no option for International trips - you have to fly..... Well, think about it!!!
by CRUISER on Monday, July 04, 2011
American is raking it in on bag fees because they told their reservations employees NOT to offer any information about the prices regarding bag fees or anything else unless specifically asked. They are NOT to offer information. They purposefully make passengers get a run around to talk to customer relations. And American Airlines treats their employees just as deceptively and cheats and lies to them also.
by bad on Sunday, June 26, 2011
The airlines no longer allow you to carry liquids onboard so going with only a carry-on is not often feasible. I would like to see them allow one checked bag for "free" (just raise your rates by the amount up front) and then charge for the 2nd bag. WestJet and AirCanada allow one "free" bag (but their rates are usually a little higher than other airlines) so it's being charged that way. Doesn't seem to irritate me as much as a separate charge.

The best way to travel for me is to ship my baggage via FED-EX or UPS, at least for the excess or heavier items, anything they are going to charge me for. Better that paying the fees to the airlines, that just encourages more fees to be coming our way! Plus, you don't have to worry about transporting baggage to, thru, or from the airports! The bags are waiting for me at the front desk (or where ever) you are going!!! just a way to show the airlines we don't like being fee'd to death!
by fast lane 69 on Monday, June 13, 2011
There should be separate two columns for checked baggage when travelling internationally or state in parenthesis. For example Delta does not charge for 1st check bag when traveling between the US and the Caribbean. This makes sense considering the-you might be survive with just a carry on for domestic travel but for international flights it is fairly considerate to allow one checked bag without a fee (not a higher price)!

ITS MY BIRTHDAY!!
by Edward M. Drake on Thursday, June 09, 2011
It seems like there's a change with US Airways baggage fee when checking in online. I was checking my flight online from Mexico City to Vancouver, and clicked the button says 'pay now'. Then the screen showed the first bag fee gets waived! I didn't find any prices on online check in prices on usairways' website, so I've been assuming it's same $25 for 1st bag. Your web site states $23 online, but their web site doesn't say anything about it, so I assumed there was no discount online. Of course I'm not Preferred member, military member or anything. Because nothing on my boarding pass says the fee has been waived, I've made a screen shot of it. I can even send it to you! When I checked in online when leaving from Vancouver for Mexico City, I don't recall clicking 'buy now' button, so although I technically completed check in online, I ended up paying US$28 at the counter! Why not US$25? They say that's due to their local 12% HST (Harmonized Sales Tax). I don't know why the agent at Vancouver collected the bag fee. Simply because I didn't click 'pay now' button? This is very confusing, certainly I'll look for refund, and I hope they won't try collecting bag fee when checking in tomorrow at Mexico City or after through US Customs at Phoenix!
by maverik on Wednesday, June 08, 2011
Last time I paid online for my baggage on United they did not offer the discount even though I replied to their email that stated there was a discount if you paid online prior to checking in.

AAL charges $25 for the 1st bag, when the bag weighed over 50lbs I was charged $60 MORE. The overage was less than 7lbs, but for personal reasons I cold not remove the overage. When the ticket agent charged me, I told him he failed to subtract the $25 fee already paid. He then advised that the fee was in addition to the checked baggage fee!!! The flight was both delayed and moved to another gate. To add insult to injury, because of the delay they offered to check, FOR FREE, all the passengers carry on bags to help expedite the boarding process. By the way, the little smirk I got from the ticket agent when he happily goals me "no no it's an additional fee" still infuriates me. It is time to charge these yahoos for their traveling wardrobes stored in the overhead bins. I know we need to curb our language, but you can well imagine what I wold prefer to write! Fly with AAL? In Dallas we all look forward to the end of the Wright Amendment, cause when it's gone, Southwest will be king and AAL will be whimpering in second place!

The USA airways services are detailed very nicely here. I am glad seeing it. Actually I want to know about the different courier service Dallas companies. Please share list of those courier service providing company.
by courier service Dallas on Monday, May 30, 2011
@dixfaith: They don't charge the fee to make money, they do it to cut down on the number of bags they have to move, and the number ONE thing this does is CUTS THE AIRLINES LABOR COST, less CS and Baggage agents, then less bags checked less bags that miss connect and have to be delivered and then less weight on the plane, less fuel needed and lastly YES it is money in the bank.

I have, on two cross-country USA trips shipped my belongings via UPS to my destination hotel (or friend's home) and carried only my laptop and a large purse with basic hygiene products in it) - and believe you me - it was cheaper and made traveling easier to boot. I shipped in plenty of time to ship ground rather than 2-day/3-day. Hotels have been very accommodating so far.

Let me see if I have this right....My wife and I are average weight, but we pay $85 for three bags. The man and woman in the seat ahead of me are grossly obese, but have no luggage so it's cheaper to transport them?? They should have to at least pay for two seat each!!!

I have family in Hawaii, and believe me folks, if I could take Amtrak or Greyhound to visit them I WOULD! Charging fees for baggage is idiocy...they should just charge what they want for the ticket price up front, and call it a day!

I'm travelling from JFK to SFO with Delta in June but being a citizen of the EU I have no idea how to pay my baggage check-in fee, because my bank account is not in USD. At some places my mastercard is accepted (e.g. I could book accomodation online with it), but at some places it isn't. Do you think I can pay in cash at the airport? (I have a Bank of America account as well, but since I'm not arriving on a business day I can't deposit money on time.)

Thanks to Watchdog for the info you provide. Wish you or anyone could do something about these out-of-control airlines & their ridiculous fees for bags & everything else they can think of + constantly increasing airfares. Our gov't protects airlines totally incl the ludicrous TSA which makes no one any safer, refuses to do anything to protect passengers, & both blame ALL on passengers endlessly. What's wrong with this picture & why does this only get continually worse???

BUYER BEWARE;; UNITED AIRLINES PROCESSES CREDIT CARDS DAYS AFTER THE RESERVATION HAS BEEN MADE ON THEIR WEBSITE WITHOUT COMPLETING THE RESERVATION. MY CARD WAS DENIED..THE RESERVATION WAS CANCELLED AND THEN DAYS LATER..THEY BOOKED THE RESERVATION AND TOOK THE MONEY FROM MY CARD. This is NUTS!!! I just read about Spirit raising their rates. Unless I absolutely have to, I will not fly any longer. On a 500 mile trip, I can get there faster driving than I can flying. What with 2 hour check in prior to take off and then not having a direct flight but having to go through a hub. The airlines are becoming nonsensical and ultimately will put themselves out of business. GOOD RIDDANCE!!!!

Spirit is unbelievable. They charge $28 for dom. & $33 for inter.if you go online and $38/43 at the counter or kiosk. That just went up. We know someone who flew from Detroit to Cancun via Lauderdale on March break. They were charged $25 for the first leg and because it was a different flight $33 for the second leg!!! We flew direct and it was $33. They charge $30 for a large carry-on if you pay online, $40 when you declare at the kiosk check-in or $45 if you pay it at the gate! They are out of control!

Airlines who 'silently" raise their fees will outrage passengers who weren't aware and causing more and more travelers to either not fly or find others that are more "customer service" oriented. Which means that NONE of the US airlines would be used. I say to them, KEEP IT UP and see where it gets you. I no longer fly unless it is CRITICAL. For pleasure I fly non-US airlines who are more consumer oriented and surprise, profitable. Airlines in the US just don't get it. NONE OF IT. They treat the consumer badly, charge whatever they wish and then have the gall to wonder where all the passengers went. IDIOCY can only be fixed when they "die". Bankruptcy is the only thing they seem to understand. So, I say GO FOR BROKE. Cheers to you. The only morally bankrupt worse than airlines, beside Walmart, are banks.
by javanut4673 on Thursday, March 24, 2011
Each pound of weight on the plane requires more fuel for the plane to get off the ground. Since they can't charge the passengers per passenger weight, they have to figure out some way to recoup the losses from hauling the sheer tonnage of American passengers.

These fees hinder the economy. If you can't shop without added cost, why shop??? Why fly????

I'm blessed to not live in the US. In Asia, only 1 airline (Air Asia) charges passengers for luggage. The rest you can check in 2 pieces for free. Oh and you get meals and drinks too on the flight. Full service, just like airlines in the US in the 90's or earlier. Where have the service gone oh dear corporate America?

by steve55126 on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
they'll be weighing passengers at the gate next... there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the dollar per pound calculation airlines are using, they just know they can get away with it; honestly what's different today from yesterday on transporting your luggage, the weight hasn't changed, the space hasn't changed, but it sure does change their bottom line doesn't it?
by myohmy on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
Spirit's charge for carryon is dis-spiriting! Already I am juggling air versus surface for short to mid-distance travel. Funny how with TSA checkin time delays surface becomes more and more attractive.
by RadComMun on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
what about charging more for overweight people - ticket prices should be calculated by 'weight of person and luggage' - that would be fair! Airplanes are using more energy to transport more weight.
by worldtraveler on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
I really appreciate airlines giving lower fares to people with fewer bags, but they really need to account for carry-on bags now. In addition to using scarce overhead bin space, big carry-ons slow down loading and unloading the plane and require additional expensive security lines. There should be a bigger price break for not using overhead bins than for not using baggage compartment space.
by giraffedata on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
The fares I'm looking at on Southwest, including checked bags, are the same as all the other airlines excluding checked bags. San Jose to Phoenix April-June.
by giraffedata on Wednesday, March 23, 2011
Want to beat the baggage fees, ship whatever you need via Fedex or UPS, less than half of round trip baggage fee. Just do it a day or two ahead of time.

by johnny01 on Wednesday, March 02, 2011
Charging for baggage has put airline travel even more attractive than all the other problems that now plague the traveler. It is a wonder that any one is traveling on your planes! I see that the 2 most popular airlines, JetBlue and Southwest are still free of charge. Good! I hope even more passengers gravitate there! Arthur Thompson
by Arthur Thompson on Thursday, February 24, 2011
Southwest airlines is for the most part playing a big hoax on the american public. Great that bags are free, it is the cost for humans thats the problem. The last two times I tried to box Southwest their ticket prices were outrageously high. Yes, I will have to pay $46 for bags on Delta, but my airfare was more than $300 less than it was on Southwest. Too bad my bags can't take a free vacation where I am going on Southwest and I will just meet them there after I get off of my Delta flight. Has anyone else noticed the Southwest higher prices?
by Dr. H & T on Wednesday, February 23, 2011
At least Southwest is being upfront about the true cost of flying with them. I appreciate seeing the real cost when I am searching, not when I have spent half an hour comparing and click to checkout.
by muggs on Monday, February 21, 2011
Just wondering why Southwest Airlines adds their bag fees in their price & then says bags fly FREE. I have been looking at flights to Reno Nv. & have found several that are a $100 cheeper but when you add in their bag fees it brings it back to the Southwest price. just found it interesting??
by bigbear on Sunday, February 20, 2011
I am just a vacation traveler. I think everyone is missing the big picture here. You can still fly for the same cost as you could 15 years ago. SO what is they want a little more money for carying your over packed bagage. SOme people might find out that they do not need as much as they have always packed in the past.
by Sparky on Saturday, February 19, 2011
I've been enjoying reading the postings here and I share each of your sentiments completely. The airlines are simply being greedy and are no longer customer focused. It used to be you got the best care in the air (and on the ground). Now they simply want your cash and do not care about the quality of the experience. Unfortunately, blogs such as this are never read by those at the airlines who make the decisions to charge fees. If you really want to make a change, you need to find some way to prove price fixing or corrupt practices and sue the airlines or at least talk with your congressmen and get the government back into the mix and regulate them more closely. The airline industry, no matter how you spin it, is a monopoly of many individual companies. Only a few have decided to remain customer focus and not play the price fixing game. Good for them! I hope the good ones succeed and I really hope the others fail, or at least see the errors of their ways. I pay because I have no other choice.
by Feeling Ripped Off on Tuesday, February 15, 2011
I would rather pay the additional 50.00 on my ticket price than deal with the nonstop rip-off fees. I thought airlines wanted to help attract business but apparently they want to drive people away. Go back to carryon bags only being accepted if the case fits in the small container at check-in...a great system which kept weight and size down to normal carry-on bags; but then the airline can't rip you of with fees so I doubt they will bring it back.
by tired of fees on Monday, February 14, 2011
for some of these fee levels you could buy new clothes at your destination for less. How about not taking the luggage? Just wear several sets of clothes onto the aircraft. They aren't charging a fee for the clothes on your back, yet. Can TSA scanners see through several layers of clothes?
by Flyin Light on Monday, February 14, 2011
I am seeing more and more nervy passengers bring on board bags too large to fit into the overhead bins. Then the attendant takes the bag, tags it, and puts the bag ouside the door, to be stored below. My question - are these passengers charged the checking bag fee like the rest of us honest people who check our oversize bags and pay the fee? If the answer is no, then all of you passengers out there start carrying on your oversize bags.

I just recently returned from Europe. I flew from BWI to Paris and paid $50.00 for a second piece of luggage. Not happy, as I've been to Europe 25 times and this was the first I was charged for overseas luggage. "However", I booked a flight via AMERICAN AIRLINES back to the states with first leg from Brussels, via Brussels Air. They told me as I gave my bags that there was a 150Euro charge for second bag. That's $201.00!!! I was told to talk to the counter, and I did. Sorry about that was the answer. Going back to my bags, the man told me he'd sent them through and hoped I didn't need anything. "Well, I needed my shaving kit" as there was a 12 hour layover in Milan, Italy. I wouldn't get my bags until J.F.K. At J.F.K. customs,(Wednesday) my bags weren't there. In Baltimore, same thing. Lady was nice at baggage section and told me, "probably tomorrow". Well, my bags didn't showup until Saturday, I got the first one, and Sunday the second bag: missing my nice leather jacket, 3 shirts and pants, with papers missing. I sent AMERICAN AIRLINES a certified letter on Monday last week. Still haven't heard anything. I won't go back to Europe, or anywhere else via American Airlines. I was taken hostage and robbed without a gun! Tim

by Luggage solution on Tuesday, November 30, 2010
I love this site! Airlines can charge any fee they want, but let us work on requiring the baggage fee to be included in any comparison pricing. We are flying to Florida for a week and each checking a bag will cost us an extra $100.00. The luggage charges are creating chaos in the cabin by forcing passengers to stuff oversized carry on bags in places they don't fit. Then the airlines don't enforce their own carry on policy.Southwest does it best!!
by scromell on Tuesday, November 23, 2010
American Airlines have increased the price for baggage on flights to/from Canada. They now charge 25$ as well. :-( I almost booked an AA flight now but checked their FAQ just to make sure it is $15 - but it has changed to $25. Guess what, they won't do business with me.

The only way to get out of Alaska is fly if you want to get anywhere in less than a week. Do the airlines expect travelers to travel without a change of clothes? Should we buy new every time we travel? I do not believe the airlines fly with empty space in the hold. What is filling the space?? General cargo - so fewer cargo planes are in the air? If it is cargo, what kind of cargo is it -- is it safe to transport with passengers??

As an Aussie tourist spending a month travelling around the US - these fees are excessive. We only charge $10 AUD on the cheapest economy ticket in Australia. I have a 9 internal flights throughout the US during my stay which means less money spent at my destinations. At least when I go home on Hawaiian Airlines I get to have two 70lbs bags free - so I guess most of my money will be spent in Honolulu.

by Esteban on Monday, August 23, 2010
The rational thing to do would be to have a per-seat charge plus a weight charge, it costs much more to transport a 300 pound person with a twenty pound carry-on than it does to carry a 110 pound person with a 50 pound suitcase. Of course this will be considered politicaly incorrect....rationality has nothing to do with this folks: it's a matter of what the market will bear. The airlines carefully consider how best to maximize their revenues.... this is called "business".

Fly Dallas-NY for $400 thats about 1800 miles, etc. and we also expect them to provide free drinks, etc. Come on people, recognize a bargain and be thankful! vancity has a very excellent post. I understand the reasoning for the fees, the costs for luggage was always there it just used to be rolled up into the cost of the ticket. I personally would just like a "standardized" fee system rather than the range of anywhere from 0-$50 depending on the particular airline. I feel some of them -are- gouging when they realized that people will just pay the fees and go on. Bottom line for me is, I don't think that a fee for my luggage should cost more than it would take for me to send it to my destination by UPS/Fedex/Postal mail. This fee system is similar to what a lot of bus routes do that I've liked for years. All bags larger than a lady's purse/tote or over 50lbs are considered "luggage". First bag is free every bag after that must be "shipped" paying the fee according to the final destination. Norfolk, VA to DC? pretty cheap. Norfolk, VA to San Diego, CA? Not so much. Bottom line is I understand the longer the trip, the more stops and switches, the more people involved with handling my luggage and the more salaries the airlines have to pay. I would rather pay a fee and have a better expectation that when I land at my final destination my bags are there than to ever have to deal with Lost Luggage again.

When will Southwest come to Atlanta? They'll get ALL my business when they do.

More bags = more weight = more fuel. US Airlines are only now beginning to post profits after 10 straight quarters of losses (businessweek dot com/news/2010-07-14/delta-may-lead-airlines-profit-with-more-fliers-fewer-seats.html). And 911 left the industry crippled before that. People want to pay next to nothing (eg $300 from PHX to IAD?? That's crazy cheap), want their plane and bags to arrive on time, expect to be put up in hotels should anything go wrong... You get what you pay for. If airlines aren't profitable then nobody wins. No non-stop service to your favourite middle of nowhere destination. In fact if airlines can't make money there will be no flight at all. When airlines don't make enough money you get fatigued pilots who are overworked and are paid less than Fast Food managers to carry 50 plus people in a piece of sheet metal hurling through the air at 500 mph to their destinations... Everybody from the check-in counter staff to the rampies to the pilots are underpaid. If you want your bag on time then the rampies should make more than 9 bucks an hour. Less maintenance delays will also cost you...those planes are really not cheap to maintain as you can imagine... So in sum, a good airline is a profitable airline. One that can afford to provide you with the service you expect from them regardless of the price of your ticket. Remember that you're being whisked off into the troposphere in a 300,000 lb metal beast of a machine that costs hundreds of millions of dollars (in the case of larger widebody aircraft). No frills carriers have caused airfare wars that only result in the airlines having to sell seats for less than they're worth to stay competitive. Lets not take air travel for granted.
by vancity on Monday, August 16, 2010
I'd rather pay more for a ticket than pay extra for luggage. Let's all pick airlines that allow at least one piece checked and one carry-on at no charge.
by KeepPeddling on Thursday, August 12, 2010
I think that if it is going to be a charge for your luggage to go underneath the plan then it should be a charge for people who carry on luggage. There is a different from a tote bag and roll on luggage. You have people standing trying to stuff luggage in overhead compartment. I look at people doing this with the same size luggage I've just paid $25.00 for my luggage to go underneath. Let's be fair and just charge a fee for luggage in general and then may be I want feel like I am being robbed by the airlines.
by Why on Wednesday, August 11, 2010
Read this carefully. The corporate giants have joined hands only to make money out of the common man.For comparison let's take Southwest and Air Tran.A trip from PHX to IAD return in september would be 331.00 with two free bags.Same days and similar time on Airtran would be 248.00 plus 15.00 and 25.00 a total of 288.00 which looks better.Just think if your fare is 288.00 its good for the guy who has two bags to check, its too much for the guy who has no bags to check. There is another way these airline tries to make money is through seat selection by passengers ranging from 6.00 to 25.00, if you do not pay then at the gate you may sit at the highest priced seat. there was no reason for the airlines to cut down on the complimentary hot food served on all flights, they still serve on all airlines except those listed above all over the world. In Europe on one of the Air France flight from London to France the food was better than many fast food restaurants in USA. Protest and Boycotting one airline at a time is the best way to get these corporate giants to their knees. These additional charges are just a 100% profit for them. They do not even pay their employees extra.
by I Think I Calculate on Sunday, August 08, 2010
Let's get real people. Before luggage charges came to be, people would take a one hour weekend trip and you would think they were going to Alaska for a month. All this extra baggage adds weight to the aircraft making it more difficult to get the plane off the ground. Don't be surprised if SW Airlines starts charging for the 1st bag instead of the 3rd the beginning of the year. They are no longer "the lowest" fare airline. How can they be, when they don't charge. These airlines can not operate at a loss. You want to fly? PAY THE FEES & STOP COMPLAINING!!!
by Turtle on Wednesday, August 04, 2010
These rates are for each leg, so you would pay twice for round trip. When you connect with another airline, as long as the whole trip is booked on one ticket, you usually pay only one fee to the first airline. The bags are usually transfered to the other airline when you connect flights. However, if you have to claim the bags and recheck them, I suppose the other airline would charge the fee again. One time I traveled with American on the first flight, connecting with United on the second flight, then the other way around on the return leg. I paid one fee to American on the first leg, then one fee to United on the return leg. The airlines transfered the bags when I connected flights.
by hdave on Monday, August 02, 2010
I agree with jackalope, charge for the carry on bags and allow checked bags for frre. It's become one of the most ridiculous hassles I've ever seen with so many people trying to avoid the fees and carrying on bags that are too large, security check lines then take longer and then there is no longer enough room in the overhead compartments for a simple laptop case.
by frequent flier on Saturday, July 31, 2010
I think its highway robbery that airlines charge so much for luggage. especially in this bad economy. my boyfriend and I bought a ticket to vegas that ended up costing us an additional unexpected 100 to fly. Next time we will fly southwest or better yet drive
by of geamy on Tuesday, July 27, 2010
When you travel you're obviously going to bring luggage. There are those that take advantage of that and bring a kitchen sink and their garage that caused this whole thing to begin with. However, it seems the airlines are taking advantage of this as well. THANK YOU SOUTHWEST AIRLINES! If southwest airlines can do it so can they. Add price to the package not the luggage. Jackalope you might want to re-evaluate yourself, your logic is broken.
by BadBusiness on Monday, July 26, 2010
I think they should charge $100.00 for carry-ons to eliminate the ludicrous hassle in the aisles and speed up boarding and unloading. Checked bags should be free.

by keywestbiscuit on Monday, July 19, 2010
I usually fly casino junkets and have not paid airline baggage fees. I just booked a flight for my son to Florida to volunteer at a wildlife refuge. Then I find out I have to pay an additional $23 for him to check his bag. Guess volunteering will soon be out of the question to distance places as the flight is over $200 then tack on an additional baggage fee of $23 through Delta and the cost of volunteering has become to high. Why does 1 bag cost so much? I'll be finding a new airline...if they all charge that much, his volunteer time will be better sent closer to home and the airlines will loose money. Carry on is the way to go...if you are flying Delta
by GaTwister on Sunday, July 18, 2010
Stop whinning and travel with a carry-on. There is a lot to consider about baggage. The baggage must be weighed so plane is not flying with excess weight. There are a lot of salaries to be paid for the extra baggage which needs to be handled. This all is a no brainer. A carry-on bag solves all the problems. You do not have to wait in any lines to check bags or to claim them your baggage is always with you and therefore free of possible thief. Pack monotone and just being a couple of pants and several more shirts or blouses. You can always rinse your clothes if need be. Be smart, be savvy and save at the same time by bringing just a carry-on.

Amen Jimmy !! I thought the same thing. Haven't flown in over 2 years and when I got hit with a surprise charge at the gate (after buying my tickets online) I was LIVID...repeat LIVID. The counter clerk says "well...we've had this for over two years". I don't care I said, haven't flown in over two years plus this sort of thing should be paid for up front (online) if an extra charge is going to be imposed. I bet that one airlines will back out of this and refuse to charge customers and they'll win the hearts and business of customers. Will drive before I fly for another reason now.

by james on Monday, June 07, 2010
I think the Airlines are being very greedy; the fees are just to expenses. If they had to access fees it should have been $5.00 dollars for first bag then 5.00 more there after. "They have taken the fun out of traveling". Only in America when businesses decide what type of business they want to open knowing the cost and services needed to run the business ,then pass the expense to their consumer.
by lucille on Saturday, June 05, 2010
Airlines charging baggage fees is the final straw for me. They recently reported that airline fees are about the same as last year. Sure, because baggage fees, curbside check fees, seat selection fees etc etc. are NOT included in this years average fees. Southwest has got it right and I try to steer my travel in that direction. They are a true value for the dollar and have an excellent attitude from gate to gate. I have got hundreds of thousands of miles accumulated with United and Alaska. Dump your miles, they really are not worth very much. Screw the loyalty programs, they devalue the miles, change the award levels and only USE the programs to Use you. And finally, when you consider everything and start heading toward to little skinny seat with the person in fron that reclines right into your face,...I have expanded my driving radius and have never regretted it.
by actorgws on Thursday, June 03, 2010

by lstaircavvet on Saturday, May 08, 2010
Why some airlines charge for checked luggage and Spirit for carry-on. That will hurt those who rarely flies and/or who is on a limited/little income (like me). I still won't fly SW. As a family with two small children, we have been seated apart due to their boarding policy. And once I spend the (minimum) $10 to get an earlier boarding time, any savings has been lost. SW is totally not family friendly. Currently, I fly pretty much ANY other airline, and simply ship our stuff. We carry on food for the kids, and a few snacks for us, our laptop, and a backpack of toys. So yeah. No Spirit airlines either. Frankly, if there were a time effective way to go coast to coast without the airlines, I would stop flying. I have already cut our air travel by more than 80%, due to the fees and policies. Their loss.

Read my lips... HIGH SPEED RAIL. Folks in this country just won't wake up will they? Door-to-door high speed rail beats air for distances up to about 1000 miles or so when you factor in time taken to get to the airport (most US cities do not have efficient mass-transit links to get folks in and out of their airports), negotiate airport check-in, security screening, luggage retrieval and then get out of the airport to your final destination. Governments need to stop bailing out the US airline industry and stop subsidising this inefficient (time, money, energy) mode of transport. Let airfares rise to the true cost of providing the service and high speed rail will win out hands down.

by Dizneyfreak on Tuesday, April 06, 2010
With the fees, everyone tries to bring as much as then can with them. If it doesn't fit, they gate check with no fee. I think those people should be charged DOUBLE. I'm sick of not finding room for my normal size carry on. I'm sick of having flight attendants ask me to put mine under the seat leaving me less leg room just because others needed the overheads. And I'm sick of the fees. Today I read that Spirit air is going to charge for carry on bags. It's just a matter of time before all passengers have to step on a scale and pay per pound.

I can't even begin to put in words how angry I am about the airlines and their baggage policies. The greed and ripoff companies in this country are what make it horrible to fly these days. I am angry before I even get on the plane and others are too. I was told I might not be able to bring on my small - under the seat carry-on once because too many people brought too much overhead carry on luggage. Now how is it better to have a ton of luggage in the overhead bin and not under the belly of the plane in case of an emergency? DISGUSTING!!
by Disgusted by Greed on Sunday, April 04, 2010

Holy schmoly! I was just about to buy tickets on ALLEGIANT. They want 40 freaking dollars for ONE BAG. Which clashes with their baggage fees information pop-up that says they charge "between $15 and $25 for the first checked bag." Going to call them and ask if they care about the discrepancy, which I highly doubt. Now I'm looking at other airlines, despite the huge inconvenience factor for me. *SIGH*

We are considering limiting luggage, by buying what we need when we get to our destination then donating it to a charity. With the economy the way it is, its cheap to buy clothes and then give away. It's a lot easier on the back while trying to move luggage as well. This way, we win, charities win and the airlines don't.

It seems a bunch of fools thought of this stupid idea to even charge for what is necessary for travel. What next, how much oxygen a passenger is allowed to breathe. If I travel, I will not have any luggage checked. I will definitely travel light. This is totally pitiful and nnecessary, and the consumer knows it. I will go with Southwest, and I hope they travel to more places. SWA will have my business and the other big airlines can reduce the salaries of the executives to pay for what's needed to keep the flier's business.
by WillDriveMyCar on Sunday, January 17, 2010
I'm a long time AA frequent flyer. I'll be flying Southwest from now on. Southwest is the only airline that do not nickle and dime their customer. If you need to change your flight, you get to keep the money you paid as a credit for future travel as long as you do it within a year. I think they are very fair.
by traveling guy on Saturday, January 16, 2010
Like lots of others, whenever possible, I'll be gving my business to airlines that do NOT charge fees. But, here is something we can all do... don't check a bag! Fill your rollerbag to the max and as your second carry-on item, use a sizeable back back. Try to fit everything in those 2 pieces. Maybe if we are all cramming our crap into the overheads, the airlines will get?? Most likely they will begin to limit carry-ons. When that happens we can simply put on layer after layer of our clean underwear that we find so helpful when traveling!!!

My daughter and her husband are both in the Air Force and came to visit for the holidays. I was shocked when she called me and said Delta charged them $40 for their bags. They have traveled many times and have never been charged baggage fees. The employees at the Atlanta airport were very rude to them telling them that fees are not waived for a vacation in Vegas. They are stationed at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas! I am so disappointed! I have always flown Delta and never had a bad experience, but showing that much disrespect for the military is unforgivable to me!

I don't understand all the complaints about paying extra for extra baggage. Airlines are in the cattle moving business and baggage takes up extra space and weight and both mean extra costs. It only seems far that people should have to pay extra and if the airlines really wanted to match costs with fares they would weigh the passengers and their baggage to determine fares. Calves and small heifers should fly for less than overweight bulls saddled with large carryon's and a bale of hay. The airlines could be a lot more efficient if they made everyone use the restroom before boarding (why carry waste products and anyone who forgets should have to use a pay toilet). Weight would also be saved by not providing beverages or food of any kind unless the flight is over 4 hours. Folks, it's mass transportation for moving herds at a time and you should pay for any service or addition that goes beyond 'sit down, shut up and wait until you're told or prodded to get off'

Cloud Rider - You complain about "healthy" people being discriminated against. You would prefer that airlines discriminate against larger people? Your conjecture that "fat" people are unhealthy is ludicrous, immature, and uninformed. I know plenty of football players (and many others) who are well over 220 and are in extremely good health. This entire issue is nothing more or less than airlines attempting to make profits. Period. That is it! Nothing else! They have ALWAYS charged for bags (What? You don't think they weighed all those bags for fun, do you?). They estimated the total weight of the passengers, added the weight of the luggage, and left a "buffer" for safety. They charges accordingly. To add a charge for baggage (which has always been accounted for) is pure greed. Airlines have NOT been losing money because of the cost of weight. They have lost money due to mismanagement.
by Papa Smoke on Friday, December 25, 2009
Librartist2, airlines have been charging baggage fees for over a year now, maybe you should watch the news so you know what is going on in your world.
by Cloud Rider on Tuesday, December 22, 2009
Airlines should sell tickets at a value of 225 pounds combined passenger and baggage. That means at my weight of 150 pounds I can bring 75 pounds of baggage. A fat person who weighs 220 pounds gets their first 5 pounds of baggage free. Everyone then pays $1 per pound over the 225 limit. Why should I at 150 pounds pay the same as a fat person? If this is all about the cost of fuel, does a fat person not use more fuel since it is directly tied to weight? It is discrimination against healthy people!
by Cloud Rider on Tuesday, December 22, 2009
If the airlines want to charge for checked baggage, then they should be hit with a large penalty when the can't get the baggage on the same plane or lose it. Pay for pay. How about a penalty of 5X as much as we've paid to check the baggage? Seems fair?
by CLud on Tuesday, December 22, 2009
Our family typically comes to Minnesota from 3 states for Christmas. But this year, it was insane to try to bring snowpants and boots on flight due to baggage fees. My two sisters are driving here. My brother arrived today and got dinged $90 for bring the duffle bag that he has traveled NWA with for 17 years. The bag was not even heavy, just a pretty standard duffle bag but it exceeded 60 inches, length plus height plus width. Now he says he will only come every other year, and possible drive all the way from North Carolina. Good Grief!
by ImprintEd on Monday, December 21, 2009
If you are going to charge, why not add it to the price of the ticket. The ticket says TAX-USD $29.02 and TAX-USD $30.40, What is that. Do I still owe money at check-in. What is the final chage from you on any extra money needed.
by winniearchambo on Sunday, December 20, 2009
Librartist - One of the main reasons airlines have been going out of business is exactly BECAUSE they've been acting as free freight carriers for so long. I have no problem with baggage charges. Also - in reference to what is stated above - international charges are generally lower or non-existent, not higher.

This isn't a big deal for business...but for family travelers its like saying, "We don't want your business!!!" . When you have kids, hauling carry-on luggage through the airport is the last thing you need! So we take Southwest or drive for this reason. Frontier, United etc...you can kiss my 750-1500 for my family of 3 goodbye. I won't be flying your airline unless I have no other choice.
by sketch44 on Wednesday, December 02, 2009
This is the tipping point--since we can't carry-on clothes and skis, it's cheaper to drive, and the airlines will get nothing at all from us. They're just greedy.

by online games on Sunday, October 04, 2009
I find this comical actually! How many of you REALLY work in the airline industry and know what it fully entails? In all honesty, passengers brought these charges on themselves by being spoiled with so many free things for so many years. Now it's time to recover the money that was lost for many years. Still want everything for free? The past will repeat itself if not learned from.
by Stykerforce on Tuesday, September 15, 2009
Not only does Southwest not charge bag fees, but they also do not charge change fees either. You can get on another flight just by paying the fare difference (not the fare difference plus $150 like other airlines). If the price goes down, you can get a refund for the difference that can be used on another flight -- called Ticketless Travel Funds at SWA.

Southwest has better in-flight service too, free snacks and free soft drinks. It is no longer the "cheap" airline. It has the best fares (generally) and has more free "frills" than a lot of them. Just bring your iPod or similar device for in-flight entertainment.

by ILUVSWA on Monday, September 28, 2009
It is a shame that the air lines are making you pay for all of your checked baggage. First of all I don't mind paying for my 2nd bag, but to have to pay for my first check bag, I do think, as I said a shame. I don't fly a lot, so maybe I should complain, but I remember when the airlines gave you a meal, and treated you with some type of respect. With times the way they are, and the way people have to try to make it just to live, how much more money do the CEO's need. I don't think the employees who work the ticket counters, check the bags, to the cleaning, are the ones making all the extra money that the airlines are receiving for all the extra fees that they charge. If I have to pay all the extra money that they charge, then pleas give me some respect when I do fly.

Well, if any one is truly getting sick of all of this crap that the airlines are pulling, why not take a train? they still go to all major city's and allot of smaller ones, its considerably safer than flying, and it wont take much longer (including the time spent at airports with security and the like these days) they're much more spacious and comfortable.
And best of all, no major security checkpoints, borderline (or not so borderline) invasions of privacy, all of the things that many of us have come to hate about flying these days.

by SteamNut on Sunday, July 26, 2009
Airlines have every right to charge fees for bags because they have a direct impact on what is likely their second biggest operating cost (fuel...labor costs being the largest operating costs--thanks unions!), and capitalism works because we can shop airlines that charge no fees (Southwest #1) or that charge lower fees (American) than the "ultra discount" carriers. Now, seat selection fees? That is a crock, but it is the market at work. I don't fly airlines that charge fees I don't want to pay. We have the power of the checkbook; use it, and stop complaining.

Is anyone else seeing another problem here with extra baggage fees? The airline is essentially going onto the express courier service business just like UPS, FedEx etc, without any apparent consumer recourse for poor quality, rude, mishandled or botched service. I doubt I am the only one to notice that airlines treat you and your bags with far less respect and reliability than the courier companies in getting your "packages" delivered on time and in good shape. My sister just had her bags lost after paying extra fees. When they finally arrived two days later, waking her up after midnight to deliver them, she discovered the bags had been searched somewhere on route and the handlers had neglected to repack the bag into its original carefully and neatly packed condition (ie: they were a mess). All her gifts and belongings arrived smashed and broken because of it. Now if that were FedEX how long do you think they would stay in business treating the customer like that? If the airlines charge and accept extra dollars above and beyond the fees already built into an airline ticket, then they have entered into a specific and, I should think, legally binding contract with the customer to deliver their packages in a timely and safe manner. They need to be held accountable for the quality of their work. They have been moaning about lack of profits for so long no one seems to dare to hold them accountable for their own culpability in their (in)ability to run a business; and that business includes customer satisfaction!
by Ombudsman on Wednesday, July 29, 2009
This is bulls***. I am already paying so many stupid fees. Why in the name of God do I have to pay to check my bag? Does anyone travel for a week on a two way ticket without checked baggage? If cost have gone raise the price of my ticket to cover my f***ing bag.

WHAT THE F_ _ K!!!! It has been a few years since I've had to call on the service of the Airlines. I must say, I am still trying to understand the fees. This is a TOTAL DISGRACE...... How can the airlines be allowed to do this to SOME people, when the people who can afford to pay do not have to pay. It's bad enough when the tickets are already HIGH AS Hell!!!!, and you have to figure out how to pay baggage fees both departing and returning. This being the case, the consumer should just buy the freaking airline, because we are paying for everything as it is. If it were not for a family emergency YOU would not get a dime of my money..........

I gladly pay more to fly JetBlue. I wish several of the nickle-n-dime companies would just die already!

Baggage fees don't actually mean most people pay for their bags. It means people slow down the security checkpoints and endanger other passengers by lugging heavy crap onto the plane and into the overhead bins instead of checking them. People have been seriously injured (I've seen it happen right in front of me and will no longer sit in an aisle seat bc of it) from morons lugging inappropriate bags on instead of checking them. Overhead bins open in turbulence or super-morons pull their bags down and smack other passengers in the head.

Some of these airlines are finding themselves in a bit of a spot, as other airline reduce their ticket prices and hide the charges in luggage and other fees. It LOOKS like they are charging less when they are not, forcing other airlines to also charge the fees to be able to compete on ticket price (mostly due to internet site taking over the ticket selling). What needs to be done, is we need to get congress to outlaw some of these fees and create a transparency of pricing so they can all play on a level field. I just paid $50 more for a Southwest flight but will save money on the total - go figure. Please write you congressman!

by jongolfs on Tuesday, June 02, 2009
Think about this; I weigh 165#s and I have to pay $15.00 for my first bag 50# or less. If my bag is 51 -70#'s I have to pay $65.00. The person in front of me weighs 265#s pays the same. Looks like Alaska Airlines is now going to be charging for the first bag. Hopefully people will have the sense to stop flying them as a result.
by Steve on Sunday, April 26, 2009
US Airways will be jacking up their baggage rate to $20 for the first bag and $30 for the second starting on July 9th, 2009 if you don't pay for your bags online. This is getting rediculous. Might as well just ship your bags UPS a few days prior! Going to start flying exclusively Southwest soon.

AA does not charge fees for the 1st two bags under the weight/size limit, NOR do they charge for a boxed bike if one has only one other checked standard item
by donaldam on Saturday, May 02, 2009
SORRY - 2 free bags are for international flights.
by donaldam on Saturday, May 02, 2009
I can't believe that US Air charges $100 each way for a golf bag. Of course it is over 62" total linear inches, all golf travel bags must be. We just found out about this $200 round trip fee, so we will not be able to take our clubs to play at a resort that included free golf in its price. Renting and cart fees would be $98/day, so that is out of the question too. We are upset because we were really looking forward to this trip and playing golf in another country.

I'm flying a group flight with my cheer team on april 30th and we will return that monday which is may 4th. The lady on the phone at american airlines in the pittsburgh international told us that the bag fees would be $30 for the first bag. Either this chart is not correct or the lady lied to us. But we are now flying jet blue where we will not pay any bag fees because of our large group.

I'm saying this because I like to travel myself, not just for business, especially since most of you aren't in my area anyway.

Take your bags to your nearest shipping store (UPS Store, FedEx Office, Pack & Ship, etc.) and just ship them out instead. It gets delivered to your door, it's trackable, insurable, and 9 times out of 10 it's cheaper. Some stores will even pick your packages up for you, just call and ask.

It makes a whole lot more sense than dealing with the geniuses at the airline counters, and since most mail and parcel centers like mine are independently owned and operated, you're helping out a local business rather than filling the coffers of these airlines that are now charging you for the privilege of buying a ticket(Spirit Airlines).

I just learned today, April 23, 2009, that Alaska Air will begin charging $15 for the first checked bag. Here is what their web site has to say:

"Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air passengers traveling on tickets purchased or reissued on or after May 1, 2009 for travel on or after July 7, 2009, will be charged $15 for the first checked bag* and $25 for the second checked bag.

*The first checked bag service charge is pending Canadian government approval for passengers traveling to/from Canada."

I am an Alaska Air card holder and mileage plan member who is now questioning the loyalty to the airline. Even after their wonderful (not really) baggage handling outsourced team destroyed a piece of luggage, I still would fly them. Every time I look at flying somewhere I would always check to see if Alaska had service into or near my destination. Way to go Alaska Air, I will now begin to shop around and may end up feeling the "Love" from Southwest.

From one disappointed Alaska Airline passenger.

Just got this email from USAir making it sound like they're doing us a favor by letting us pay the baggage fees online.

Checking bags? Pay online. It's worth it!

Save time and money when you check in online. Beginning July 9, 2009, you'll be able to pay for checked bags when you check in online - $15 for your first checked bag and $25 for your second. For customers who choose to pay for checked bags at the airport, there will be an additional $5 service fee, so save a few when you check in online!

People shouldn't do it. It's obvious it was such a log jam at check in it was costing them more to collect it than it's worth. Make them stick it back in the ticket price so we can get true price comparisons online. That's the real reson they want the hidden fees you know?

For all you surfers out there that travel, United is charging 175.00 for 1 board, 2 in a bag 350.00, thats 700.00 roundtrip for 2 boards, pretty insane, I will no longer use UA, continental is 2 in a bag for 100.00, Hawaiian is 2 in a bag for 100.00, check the carraige rules before you book a trip, paying a little more for airfare, with a airline that doesn't jab it to you for surfboards, in the long run saves you, in Hawaii they are especially bad about how many boards you have in a bag, they really stick it to you there, beware!!!!
by liz on Thursday, February 26, 2009
I'm 6'7" tall. 1 - I barely fit on a plane to begin with. 2 - My clothes already cost more than most of my fellow flyers. 3 - I can't pack my "carry-on" with my clothes when I travel (see 1 & 2 above). Therefore I HAVE to check my bag. I shouldn't HAVE to PAY to check a bag. For my fellow travellers, I'm tired of stepping over all of your little roll-arounds. Getting hit on the head, because you can't lift your 60 lb. roll-around into the overhead. Lastly, no, I won't help you put it in the overhead because you can't reach or lift the weight!
by tm on Wednesday, February 25, 2009
I was against paying for bags but now I'm thinking it actually better to pay for everything. Heck we should be paying per pound for body weight also, that's what costs fuel to fly. If all things were fair every passenger would be paying a seat cost, a personal weight cost, and a baggage weight cost. That way if you fly light, you fly cheap.
by shawn on Monday, March 02, 2009
we are all not light in weight, and that is for you bloggers that keep mentioning pay by the pounds..If you can not aford to fly STAY HOME..
by Evonne on Saturday, March 07, 2009
I can understand an additional charge for over-sized/over-weight bags but why are there increasing amounts for each additional bag? I am not a heavy packer and could fit everything into one large suitcase but I prefer to take two small bags that I am able to lift.
This is discrimination against physically challenged people!

Oh yeah, thanks for the chart.

by spike on Tuesday, January 27, 2009
I've just decided I'm not flying any more. I'm tired of all the extra crap I have to deal with. I either won't go, or I'll drive. The luggage charge is the straw that broke my back.
by jmarks6205 on Thursday, January 29, 2009
SPIRIT AIRLINES NOW CHARGES YOU TO PICK YOUR SEAT ONLINE.
WHAT ELSE IS NEXT ? COIN SLOT FOR THE TOILET ?

by MICKEY MOUSE on Saturday, February 07, 2009
just booked with air tran. they should tell you your charges when buying tickets. Iwould have used southwest.
by kim on Monday, February 09, 2009
The general $15 fee for each bag is for one way, right?
So R/T is $30? That's insane, and sad.

by me on Monday, December 22, 2008
Does anyone believe it's possible that with fuel going down, the baggage fees may be dropped? I know it's a long shot, but I was just curious.
by mamafruitcake on Monday, January 05, 2009
These are a great help! But Continental it says the first bag is free!
by Jes on Sunday, January 25, 2009
Hmmmmm....now that gas prices are low, why are they still charging for the first bag???????
by CheKin on Wednesday, January 07, 2009
This is a total ripoff... Airtran charged us $39 each on duffles that had pillows in them because of the measurement on our outbound flight but not on the return... what nitwits came up with asking us to bring more luggage on board?
by lupdy on Tuesday, November 25, 2008
Continental did not charge me for my first checked bag from IAH to LAX this week (Nov 27, 2008), they may have postponed charging for the first bag based on info above. Hopefully I will not have to pay on my way back!
by DaughterNature on Thursday, November 27, 2008
I hope people give the airline industry the message by only flying Southwest. Sadly enough, people still bought tickets with American Airlines after the first bag fee was implemented.
by Steve on Tuesday, December 16, 2008
Please add Virgin America to your chart. They are definitely becoming competitive on their routes, and so far their baggage fees are reasonable enough (knock on wood) to sway me toward them over the other majors on many occasions. Thanks.
by musicianswife on Thursday, December 11, 2008
If you are traveling on two airlines and one you have frequent flyer standing so your first bag is free what happens with the other airline? I am beginning my trip with my usual airline but my return will be checked in by another airline which is what my first of three flights are. Will they charge me a bag charge for that one short, flight?
by knitab on Friday, December 12, 2008
OVERLOOKED WAS AMERICAN WAIVES FLEQUENT FLYIERS TOP TIER MEMBERS AND ANYONE TRAVELING INTERNATIONAL.
by MICHELLE on Saturday, October 18, 2008
This is out of date. Be sure to check your air carriers website so you're not surprised when you get to the ticket counter.
by Crystal on Saturday, October 18, 2008
Goodness, people don't read sometimes! :)

"There are all kinds of exceptions to these fees, especially for certain classes of frequent flyers and military personnel."

by on Tuesday, October 21, 2008
I already had problems every finding a spot for my tiny roll-aboard bag when flying for business. Now those of us with legitamately small carry-on luggage will have to compete with those just trying to stuff big bags in overheads so they can avoid fees. Another genius stroke by the airline industry.
by PKK on Wednesday, October 22, 2008
I think they should just have a weight limit and weigh the passenger with the bag. Smaller people can take a bag free.
by NKM on Thursday, November 13, 2008
Frontier started charging to breath on the plane, they don't feed you either.

UsAirways requires that everyone close their eyes for the entire flight and NO TALKING EITHER.

by klogo on Wednesday, September 17, 2008
One very important consideration that was missed is the exemption of these fees for members of frequent flyer programs. For instance, United waives most fees for pretty much all of the membership types. And International is NOT usually higher, it's usually LESS (such as first 2 bags are free)
by Shannon on Thursday, October 02, 2008
Does anyone know how to measure a baggage? Does the 'linear inch" include the height of wheels and handle?

Alaska's baggage policies have changed. They are charging effective 07/01/08. Just a note to those reading up on this subject.

Frontier is now charging $15 for the first checked bag. The fee is effective for tickets purchased after September 13 for travel after November 1. Southwest and Delta are now the only two airlines that don't charge for the first checked bag.

Have there been any additional fee increases since you posted the Baggage fee list by airline on your blog 5/28/08.By the way this is a very helpful list ,thanks I am in the travel expense department an this will come in handy

United charging $15 for first bag, beginning with tickets bought on June 13, 2008 and after.
by Sonny on Thursday, June 12, 2008
Notice that Southwest is one of two airlines that doesn't charge for a second bag. That is because they are one of the few profitable US airlines.
by Davin Peterson on Friday, July 25, 2008
Recently charged $50 (not $29) by AirTran for oversized bag. Creative (and rude) agent measured my bag along the curved edges (as opposed to side to side) and this added 4 inches. When I questioned it she said "pay the $50 or get out of line".
by Mike on Thursday, July 10, 2008
Great chart - would like to see a column added for golf/sports equipment.
by Paula on Friday, July 25, 2008
George, you're already out of date on Alaska. They announced bag fees this week.
by David G on Friday, May 30, 2008
No! I don't want to pay more on MY ticket for all those packing-challenged people who think they have to bring everything but the kitchen sink in their suitcase. Let them pay for all those bags and all that weight, not me!
by Linda on Friday, May 30, 2008
Very helpful, thanks. Would be nice to include the allowable baggage dimensions for carry on as well.
by jet on Friday, May 30, 2008
Love the chart - Wish it was "printable" . It would also be nice to have the restrictions on carry on as well.

Anybody know if you can pay with a credit card at the Skycap?
by Amy Alkon on Wednesday, June 04, 2008
Found your info on checked bagage very helpful but how about including other airlines. There is a world outside of the USA.
by Dennis Taylor on Thursday, May 29, 2008
Why not just raise ticket prices? I think this is just a way for the airlines to sell ticket low then add all the fees on. I would rather pay more for my ticket and no fees to pay. What is next???
by Katrina on Thursday, May 29, 2008
Great chart! And of course, Great Website.

Thanks
