What's old is new again, much like the TV show Friends making a big comeback, the '90s are in full effect with the return of Eastern Airlines. The carrier that ceased operations in 1991 is back selling tickets on flights between New York-JFK and Guayaquil, Ecuador, and Georgetown, Guyana starting in 2020. This is the third iteration of Eastern, which has served a charter airline and a brief stint a few years back on routes departing from Miami.
Eastern Airlines Begins Service to South America in 2020
The new nonstop service from New York-JFK to Guayaquil, aka the Gateway to the Galapagos, will begin on January 13, and intro tickets are currently on sale on travel through February for $139 one-way or $307 roundtrip. Departures from JFK to Georgetown will take off on March 5 and are bookable through May 2020.
The new routes will compete directly with LATAM and JetBlue to Guayaquil, and Caribbean Airlines and American to Georgetown, so you'll likely see prices drop on all carriers. Sign up for FREE airfare alerts to find out when they do.
- Travel Period: January 12 - May 17, 2020.
- Travel Days of the Week: Varies by the route, more info in fare details below.
- Blackout Dates: None listed.
- Minimum Stay: None required.
New Nonstop Routes
Tickets for the intro price must be booked by January 2, 2020. Or while supplies last. Tickets must be purchased directly on goeasternair.com and are currently not showing up on third-party sites.
Adventurer fares include a carry-on bag plus one checked piece of luggage up to 70lbs.
Seats will be assigned at random upon check-in for Adventurer fares. You may pay a fee between $10-25 to choose a specific seat.
As an example, I found flights departing New York JFK on Monday, January 20, returning from Guayaquil GYE on Sunday, February 2, 2020, for $307 roundtrip. This is currently much cheaper than any other airline during this period and includes a checked bag.
