Which American AAdvantage Credit Card Should You Get?

American Airlines is the largest carrier in the world, and its AAdvantage frequent flyer program was one of the first ever offered. Today, it dominates service from its hubs in Charlotte, Dallas Fort-Worth, Phoenix, Philadelphia and Miami, and is extremely competitive in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago O'hare. If you are a regular traveler on American Airlines, then you should consider holding a credit card that offers you additional AAdvantage miles as well benefits when traveling. Take a look at these credit cards and decide which one is best for your needs.

American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp Card from Citi

This entry level card offers new applicants 10,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles and a $50 statement credit after making just $500 in new purchases within the first three months of account opening. It also offers double AAdvantage® miles for each dollar spent at grocery stores, including grocery delivery services, and on eligible American Airlines purchases. You earn one AAdvantage mile for each dollar spent on all other purchases. This card also allows you to save 25% on in-flight food and beverage purchases when you use your card on American Airlines flights. There’s no annual fee for this card.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard®

With this card, new applicants can earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage bonus miles after making $2,500 in new purchases within the first three months of account opening. It also offers you double AAdvantage® miles at gas stations, at restaurants, and on eligible American Airlines purchases.  Each year, you can earn a $100 American Airlines Flight Discount after you spend $20,000 or more in purchases during your cardmembership year and renew your card. Other benefits include your first checked bag is free on domestic American Airlines itineraries for you and up to four companions traveling with you on the same reservation. You also receive preferred boarding on American Airlines flights, and a 25% savings on in-flight food and beverage purchases when you use your card on American Airlines flights. There’s a $99 annual fee for this card that’s waived the first year, and no foreign transaction fees.

CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Mastercard®

For a limited time, you can earn 70,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after making $4,000 in purchases within the first four months of account opening. This card also offers you double AAdvantage® miles per dollar spent on eligible American Airlines purchases, as well as on purchases from telecommunications merchants, cable and satellite providers, car rental merchants and at gas stations. You earn one AAdvantage mile per dollar spent elsewhere.  Benefits include your first checked bag is free on domestic American Airlines itineraries, preferred boarding on American Airlines flights and a 25% savings on American Airlines inflight Wi-Fi when you use your card. There’s a $99 annual fee for this card that’s waived the first year, and no foreign transaction fees.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ Mastercard®

This is the top of the line American AAdvantage cards and it features numerous premium benefits. First, you can earn 75,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after spending $7,500 in purchases within your account’s first three months. You also receive 10,000 AAdvantage® Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs) after you spend $40,000 in purchases within the year. It also only offers double miles on American purchases and one mile per dollar spent elsewhere.

Benefits include an Admirals Club membership for both the primary cardholder and all additional authorized users. You also get free checked bag for the cardholder and up to eight companions. Other benefits include priority check-in, priority airport screening (where available) and boarding privileges for you and up to eight travel companions on the same reservation. You even get a statement credit of up to $100 every five years for the application for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, which includes PreCheck. Finally, you get a 25% discount on in-flight food and beverages. There’s a $450 annual fee for this card, and no foreign transaction fees.
