As we mentioned yesterday, Fiji Airways has a decent New Year's Sale for travel to the South Pacific. One of the best ways to take advantage of this deal is to add on a stopover in Fiji either to or from an onward destination. Essentially, you'll get to see two destinations for nearly the same price as one. Some may also prefer to break up the long trek across the Pacific, which can be up to a 16-hour flight nonstop from the USA to Australia.

We're giving you an example here of a flight from Los Angeles to Sydney departing Thursday, February 22, then flying from Brisbane to Nadi, Fiji on Tuesday, March 6, before returning from Nadi to Los Angeles on Saturday, March 10. The total price for this itinerary comes to $947, which is just an additional $100 to the airfare between LAX and Australia.

For an itinerary like this, we would suggest checking out the cosmopolitan city of Sydney and then either travel by land or a cheap domestic one-way flight from Sydney to Brisbane. In the Brisbane area, you can visit the Australia Zoo and/or Gold Coast. At the time of posting, flights from Sydney to Brisbane can easily be found for around $50 one-way. You can also piece together a stopover itinerary that arrives and departs from the same airport down under if you wish. You'll just have to play around with dates using a multi-city search to find the lowest airfares. Sale fares are valid for travel between February 1 and October 31. For blackout dates, view each route's fare details linked on our sale page.

After visiting some sights in Australia, you may want to unwind on a remote island in the Pacific before returning home. This stopover fare gives you that advantage. Looking for a nice resort in Fiji for your stopover? We can help you out with some great deals on Hotelwatchdog.
