Check-in Policy

United Airlines offers many options for check-in, including ticket counters, curbside, self-service kiosks, online, and mobile.

Online check-in is available to those departing from a U.S. airport (or an eligible international airport) if the first leg of the flight is operated by United Airlines, the itinerary contains four flight segments or less, and fewer than nine people are in the travel party. Online check-in starts 24 hours before the scheduled departure time and must be finalized at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time for domestic flights and 60 minutes for international. To check in for a United Airlines flight, visit the United Airlines check-in page. You must have a confirmed reservation with United Airlines, United Express, or United Airlines’ codeshare partners and be able to provide a confirmation, ticket, or MileagePlus number. For online check-in, you need access to a printer, but if one is not readily accessible, you may check in online in advance and print the boarding pass at a self-service kiosk upon arrival at the airport.

If you plan to use mobile check-in, you may do so through your phone browser at mobile.united.com (choose the “Check In” option) or via the United app on your smartphone (available for Android, Apple, Windows, and BlackBerry devices). Mobile check-in requires no printing as the boarding pass is sent directly to your mobile device via email or through the app. The United Airlines mobile boarding pass is available at all U.S. airports, including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Display your United Airlines mobile boarding pass at security and at the gate.

Curbside check-in is available at certain airports and allows passengers to check bags and skip the ticket counter, going directly to the security checkpoint.

Note that many United Airlines check-in counters and kiosks do not accept cash as payment.

Baggage Policy

Passengers on United Airlines’ flights are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item (personal items include purses, backpacks, and briefcases) free of charge. Carry-on luggage must fit in the overhead bins or under the seat in front of you and must not exceed the following maximum dimensions: 45 linear in. (length + width + height) or 22" long x 14" wide x 9" tall (56 cm x 35 cm x 22 cm), including handles and wheels.

See United Airlines’ baggage fees page for a full explanation of the checked-baggage policies. Certain equipment (such as surfboards, bicycles, and oversized baggage) incurs an additional charge because of the nature of the equipment. United Airlines provides guidelines for special baggage.
