I need to preserve some United Airlines MileagePlus frequent flyer miles that are due to expire soon, but I don’t have a United credit card and I don’t plan to fly on them or on a partner airline any time soon. Any suggestions? A. There’s no excuse for anyone to have miles expire. Most airlines have shopping mall sites where they will award you anywhere between 1 and even up to 24 bonus frequent flyer miles for every dollar spent (that’s in addition to at least 1 mile per dollar charged on a frequent flyer-affiliated credit card). So, for example, if you spent $10 on drugstore.com, walmart.com, or hundreds of other merchant web sites, not only will you get bonus miles, but you will preserve any expiring frequent flyer miles. Airlines also have dining programs, which you can register for and when you dine at participating restaurants, you get bonus miles and also preserve miles. Since almost everyone shops or dines out, this is a great way to extend the life of your miles. You can use any credit card to make these purchases. For more information, check out our recent blog post on the subject. Post a Comment
I had miles (5500) accumulated and got a notice that they had expired. There was no mention of using the shopping mall sites or anything else, just that the miles had expired. Then we got a notice that my husband's were about to expire and he could use the shopping mall which I did and he was re-instated. I e-mailed them and asked couldn't I have done that and they never replied. I e-mailed them twice since and no answer. Do they ever let you re-instate your miles. I don't think it was fair that they didn't give me the same chance. My husband's miles and mine would have expired at the same time but they took mine away first and then told us about the shopping mall. by Wales on Saturday, July 24, 2010
There are many other things you can do as well. If you look in the United forum on flyertalk(dot)com, there's a whole thread on the subject. The cheapest way is probably to the Mileage Plus Mall and buy a song or tv show from iTunes, using the link from the mall. But that's probably not the fatest - and there are many stores in there, so you may be able to buy something you need anyway. You can also use your miles to buy magazine subscriptions or donate to charity - any one of these things will remove the expiration date all of the remaining miles in your account. by emcampbe on Tuesday, July 20, 2010
