Free of Baggage Fees

Q. Are there any airline companies that do not charge for luggage besides Southwest?

A. Southwest doesn't charge for the first or second bags, unless they're oversized or overweight. JetBlue also doesn't charge for the first checked bag, and neither does Air Canada or most other airlines flying internationally from the U.S.

All other domestic U.S. airlines charge for checked bags, and as you may have heard, starting Aug. 1 Spirit Airlines will begin charging for any carry-on luggage that doesn't fit under the seat in front of you.

Thanks for the info. Makes it easy to eliminate carriers and spend less time when booking tickets, especially since the prices are not lower for Spririt!

Got to agree with "been there done that". It's agonizing to wait for people trying to STUFF oversized luggage into the overhead or even worse, people who put BRIEF CASES in the overhead instead of under the seat in front of them taking up precious overhead space for those of us with a legitimate sized carry on bag! Oh, and what about the jerks that get on first when they call for rows at the back of the plane and they put THEIR carryon bags in the FRONT of the plane! What are the flight attendants doing besides saying "hi" and standing around -- aren't they supposed to be policing this sort of behavior? On one flight, there was a passenger that came on late and couldn't find a space for his luggage over his seat, so the flight attendant opened all the bins around us only to find brief cases, backpacks and other item that COULD have been put under seats. I mentioned that to the flight attendant that she may want to ask someone whose briefcase or backpack was up there to put it under their seat so this guy's suitcase could fit up there and she just ignored me. Nice. Sooo...we waited another 10 minutes until she could find space for this guys luggage! No wonder flights are never on time! People are so inconsiderate.

Why not charge for carry baggage, and not charge for checked baggage? Think how much faster passengers could be seated and on their way if we didn't have these people stopped at the entrance who are trying to get on with an oversize bag so they don't have to pay for checking it; people who made it through and trying to stuff an oversize suitcase into the storage bins, blocking the aisle; people with loaded backpacks blocking the aisles, completely oblivious of anyone around them, and completely unaware that there are other passengers trying to get to their seats. And then we go through the same thing all over again when we are trying to get off the airplane!! How many hundreds of times have we seen this. I have, on every flight I have ever been on. Most of this could all be prevented by charging for carry on luggage, but don't charge for checked baggage. Hurrah for Spirit. I hope other airlines will follow in their footsteps. isn't it a shame that a few inconsiderate people spoil it for the rest of us.

I hate all those tremendously oversized carry-ons myself. Why not just start enforcing the already existing size limit (remember those little sizing bins at the gate?) rather than punishing even those don't go oversize but hate luggage at their feet? If it doesn't fit in the sizing bin at the gate, it doesn't go in the cabin, like the old days. What a concept. Also, how often are flights going to be delayed while waiting for someone to try and fit their bag under the seat, only to have the flight attendant give up and let them place it overhead without charge (kind of like what happens now with oversized bags).

If any other airlines decide to follow Spirit, which we have never flown and never will, we'll go back to driving to our destinations more often. It's not as expensive and we can take as many bags as we need without additional fees.

Just curious as to how Southwest can continue to call their airline "low cost". I frequently find that other airlines (e.g., American) are significantly cheaper on the same route and same date. Maybe it is time they dropped the title, since this customer is no longer fooled.

Thanks to Watchdog for the always good info not available elsewhere. Re all airline fees/extras incl for baggage, it's just plain disgusting - in light of their deliberately crummy "service" & our gov't does nothing to fix this. Make Spirit a "no fly zone."

GOOD FOR SPIRIT AIRLINES.i've seen luggage that was carried on that should have been checked taking up legitimate carry on luggage space. when you are saving up for that airline ticket, just save a few dollars more for your checked baggage.

Bags are free on Delta, if you use the Delta American Express card to book your flights. It is worth the annual fee, if you travel frequently

Required flying is part of my job. When Spirit was struck, they did nothing I could see to help their paying clients. I want to save on my expenses. I will never fly Spirit because I can not afford to be left stranded.

Wow - Spirit Air...never have flown w them & I never will after reading that they are going to start charging for carry ons. Do airlines realize that we, the passengers, are TRAVELING? Hence the need for luggage...air fares are outrageous already and service on board has fallen to an all-time low, in my humble opinion. So, now I get to pay for my luggage to go into the hold AND pay a fee to carry on another bag. (gonna charge me for my diaper bag? Yep!)Next thing you know, you'll need four quarters to gain access to the lavatory!

Another reason why I wont fly Spirit Air
