Connecting at JFK this Spring?

Q. When I booked a flight from San Juan to St Louis a few months ago, we were to have a layover at JFK of about 2 1/2 hours. Since then, we've been informed by our airline that the departure time of our flight from San Juan has been changed. In fact, it's changed several times. Do we have any right to expect the airline to switch us to a better flight to ensure we make our connection?  As it stands,  there is currently a one hour layover at JFK. I'm not sure that will be enough time to make our flight, and in the past we've had horrible luck departing SJU on time, no matter which airline we fly. I fear if we miss our connection, we might be told there are no more flights to St Louis that night, that they cannot ticket us on another carrier, and then being told we shouldn't have booked a flight with such a small window to connect! Guess I'd like to be armed with every piece of knowledge I can get ahead of time.

A. You should certainly ask for a longer layover, and without having to pay a change fee. If you don't like the answer you get, try again and then again. One thing to consider here is that JFK will be closing its longest runway for 120 days, from about March 1. This runway handles about 30% of JFK's traffic, so there will probably be some delays, and this may be one reason why your flight has been rescheduled so many times.

My friend and I flew from San Juan in mid January; she on US Air, and I on Delta. Both mid late afternoon flights pushed early. My flight into Atlanta had to wait 10 to almost 15 minutes for our gate to become available we were so early. Can't say the same about my next leg which was Atlanta to Portland, Maine - the plane was available with no crew for an hour or more.

I have had this happen several times as I book my travel many months in advance, usually. I have never had a problem with the airline (Delta) nicely and without charge changing my flight if the connection is less than about 90 minutes. As AFWD mentioned, if you don't have luck the first time, try again. There should be no charge, especially at a huge int'l airport like JFK, if it's just unrealistic. I also was able to get a full refund from Island Air when they changed flights that gave me a 5-hr layover from Kauai to Molokai via HNL. Polite persistence really does still work miracles! BTW - Thanks for the heads-up about SJU. I will be picking people up from a SJU flight in April, and it's good to know to expect delays! Good luck on your change request.

I had a similar situation; I did get my flight changed, but it did involve some extra assertiveness on my part. I purposely booked a flight with a 90 minute layover due to past experience in Denver International (I book nothing under a one hour layover). The operator who took the call assured me that I would have plenty of time to make a 40 minute connection in Denver. I informed him that having flown through there over a dozen times in the past several years, I knew better than to book such a short layover. In addition, he was an operator at an outsourced call center. Since he lived in India and not my little mountain town (into which there are very few flights) I suggested that I might have a bit more insight into this particular situation. I insisted that I never would have booked this particular flight on my own and that I should not have to pay for this change. He spent quite a bit of time "speaking with a supervisor" but whatever happened he actually rebooked my husband and I on a reservation with plenty of time between flights, with no change fee. It wasn't simple, but it did work out in the end for us.

You should have no problem requesting a longer layover time.

I booked a flight to Hawaii this past year, with two stopovers (not ideal, but one that worked in terms of schedule and price). They altered my flight from Chicago to LA so many times, my window to catch my flight at LAX was down to 29 minutes. I simply called the airline (AA) and said "There's no way I'm going to make that" and they adjusted it immediately and without fee. Easiest issue with a flight I've ever had. Good luck - I hope you have the same good fortune I did.
