Florida to Down Under

Q. We are recent retirees we are planning our dream trip so don't want to mess it up. We want to travel from Tampa to Sydney, Australia in mid September of this year for 6 weeks. During the trip we are considering a 13-day cruise to New Zealand and the remaining 4 weeks traveling around Australia.

We have a few questions that we need your help with.

First, in your opinion, since it is months away, should we wait to book the flight, and or cruise, hoping for a better price or set both up now to secure them?

Second, the most economical flights are currently similar in price on both American Airlines and Qantas. Do you know if either airline has an edge as far as comfort or service since it is such a long flight?

A. You might consider breaking your trip up in Los Angeles or San Francisco for a couple of days rather than flying straight through. You might even find it’s cheaper to buy one fare, say, on Southwest from Tampa to the West Coast and then onward. Be sure to look at fares directly on Qantas.com for the flights to Australia, as they sometimes sell seats for less than you’ll find on third-party sites, and sign up for their emailed newsletters. There are frequent fare wars on the routes from California to Australia, so sign up for Airfarewatchdog or other fare alerts and jump when fares go down. I’d say that Qantas probably has the edge on service, so I’d fly with them. In order to get the best cabin location, I’d probably shop around and book the cruise portion earlier rather than later. Take a look at cruisecritic.com for some tips.

Skip the cruise. Many boring days at sea looking at the empty ocean.//Do you want to earn AA flier miles or Qantas miles? which would benefit you more?

I'd say that you are safe waiting till a few months in advance to buy tickets. Two grand is the average price for those tickets. Just keep an eye on the pricing as time progresses. I would definitely recommend flying Qantas (and I'm an American). I've flown with them to Australia twice. They have great service that includes a movie screen with every seat and complimentary drinks all the way. Their prices are also about as good as you will find. They are a sister company of AA and you can add to your AAdvantage miles when you fly with them.

Totally agree with "aussie traveller". American Airlines do not fly to Australia .... it is a code-share. Also United Airlines use really old aircraft that don't have the inflight entertainment system that Qantas does. I spent my last flight watching the moves they selected and trying to see around the guy in front of me's big head. Qantas has a vastly superior system so you are never bored. Essential on such a long flight.

QANTAS (Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service - NO U!) code-shares with American Airlines to Australia. In other words, there are no American Airlines aircraft sitting on the tarmac at Sydney airport. So, if AA offer you a cheaper price than QF - buy it! You'll still get the QF service levels and aircraft, which are excellent by comparison to other airlines. The planes that UA are using to Australia currently are extraordinarily old and out of the competition. Have recently travelled Delta on the route and found them very good as well. Small things to keep in mind, particularly in economy, is that QF will supply free alcoholic drinks (yeah!!), whereas DL is only beer and wine. QF offers the network around Australia, so possibility of getting cheaper segments there. Also, buy your domestic Australian flights in the US, you'll save the Australian GST component - which is 10%.

Agree fully with the above comments on service - Qantas is by far much better...several trips under my belt to attest to this. Even the seating in coach is MUCH more comfortable than on AA. Also the comment of staying a day or two in LA or SFO is excellent advise - it's a 14 hour flight from LAX to SYD...tack on a FL to CA flight before that...and you'll be exhausted - to say the least. Have a great trip - Australia is an amazing place and you'll not come near covering it in 4-6 weeks (consider a side trip to Tasmania - yeah I said it!)

FYI, American code shares with Qantas so you will be flying the same plane if you book with either of these 2 airlines. United has the worst seating to Australia. Delta just started flying to Sydney and V Australia (part of the Virgin Airways group) is also flying from the West Coast to Australia. Qantas has awesome service and the new A380 plane is a treat.

Maybe I'm biased, but being an Aussie and having made the trip from the USA to Australia on a number of different carriers, I'd have to definitely recommend Qantas. Depending on your exact dates Qantas offer a great Aussie AirPass during the off-season which gives room for plenty of exploring the country at a fantastic price. The added benefit of flying with Qantas is the chance of flying on the new 380 Airbus. I was lucky enough to fly this on my last trip and it was heaven. Tons of room and a great ride in general. One thing to keep in mind is also trying to purchase your flights as one ticket. This way you can avoid those increasing baggages charges from US airlines as it will be considered an international flight. All the best for your trip!!

When given a choice, I always choose a non-US carrier. Their service is almost always better. Having flown with Quantas, I highly recommend them.
