We hope to spend some time in the spring of 2010 in France and Switzerland. What’s the cheapest way to get from Avignon to Geneva or Zurich? What is the fastest way for the same trip? There will be four senior adults traveling together. All suggestions will be appreciated. A. Your best bet is to take the train rather than flying. Avignon to Geneva by high speed rail takes about 3 1/2 hours, and flying would probably take longer when you consider travel time between the city centers and the airport, plus security check in times. There are all kinds of discounts available for rail travel, and you’re better off buying directly online using the French rail system’s web site at www.sncf.com. They offer online specials as well as senior discounts. In general, even though there are many discount airlines in Europe, when you’re traveling a relatively short distance rail travel is the way to go. It’s more convenient than air travel and if you work the discounts and factor in transportation costs to and from the airport, prices are often comparable. You might also consider a rail pass from Eurail.com if you’ll be traveling a lot by train. Again, there are senior discounts for these. Post a Comment
Where is the answer about CO and UAL's mileage combined program? by BillieJ on Friday, May 07, 2010
I have heard that European countries limit the age to rent/drive a car. 70 years was mentioned. Might be a factor for the Seniors. by Mactimbra on Tuesday, May 04, 2010
Hi, if you get online 90 days before your trip, you might be lucky and get what are called piccolo fares - they are specially discounted tickets but are limited in number. You can do this on the web site for French rail. They may want you to pick up the tickets at the station in Avignon but that should be easy to do. Have a wonderful time! by kileysmom on Monday, December 14, 2009
I have rented cars in France on almost all my trips and have found that driving is very similar to driving stateside. International road signs are easy to read and detailed maps can be had though websites like ViaMichelin.com. On this site one can pick the best suited route for the type of driving you prefer, as well as cost for tolls and even estimates for fuel cost. by Bilomalo on Monday, December 14, 2009
I would definitely recommend train over either car or air, for travel within Europe unless you are a)fluent in a number of languages and b)comfortable asking directions and c)OK with driving in strange urban areas and d)comfortable with other drivers who drive at very high speeds on secondary roads--and in strange urban centers. by mickisue on Monday, December 14, 2009
An alternative to rail is to rent a car. When there are several person traveling, the cost can be cheaper than rail. This mode of travel also gives you the most flexibility. by Bilomalo on Monday, December 14, 2009
