Cruise Ship Airfare: Don't miss the boat!

Q. Is there any reason why I should buy airfare from my cruise line rather than through Expedia or whatever? It seems that the cruise lines’ fares are higher.

A. One reason is that if you buy the airfare along with your cruise, the cruise company might make more effort to accommodate you should your incoming flight be late or cancelled, or if the schedule is changed. (By the way, it’s always a good idea to arrive the day before your cruise leaves, rather than on the day, in case there’s a flight problem. Otherwise, you might miss the ship.) Also, cruise line fares might have more flexibility than the lower fares you’re finding on Expedia, etc. But maybe you don’t need to buy airfare at all, depending on the cruise line you choose. Carnival Cruise Lines now fields cruises, some year round, from 20 home ports, which are within a five hour drive of 50% of the U.S. population, including New Orleans, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and New York. By the way, if you haven’t cruised on Carnival lately, or thought it was down market, you might be in for a surprise. The food is among the best in the cruise industry, surprising considering how cheap Carnival's fares can be.

Don't think for 2 seconds the cruise line will help you if you book air through them. On the way to Tahiti we missed our connection in Denver and missed the flight to Tahiti. Princess Cruises told us to "work it out with the airline and let us know if you are going to make it." United caused us to have to buy another ticket on Air France for $4,000!!! We had to get there before the ship sailed or lose 4 days of the cruise. There were no flights available to the next island. Their guarantee is worthless!! United in Denver could have cared less if we ever got there. We had to call their regular reservation line to get help. Never again!!

Also, make sure you're not comparing apples to oranges. Sometimes the cruise airfare includes transfers from airport to the ship which can be quite a saving.

Looking at the old responses below, I think the thing these folks have failed to understand is that the quality of a cruiseline varies VASTLY from ship to ship, and itinerary to itinerary. There doesn't seem to be a lot of standardization across the companies. The people in charge of a particular ship (Captain, Cruise Director, Head Server, etc) are the ones that dictate whether your cruise is a good experience or not. I've taken 3 Royal Caribbean cruises, and they were all different in terms of service & food quality. The age of the ship also seems to figure in on the "quality" of the cruise. And the difference in quality between a 4-day cruise and an 8-day cruise can be huge. You can't judge the entire cruiseline bases on one cruise on one ship.

I have recently booked my 13th Carnival cruise. If the service and food were bad, as the review I just read were true, does anyone think I would go back after 12 cruises? I think some people are just blowing smoke and want to make business look bad. Have you ever looked at hotel reviews? Same thing. I've stayed at first class hotels and people will still slam them. Fact is, they most likely have never taken a cruise or stayed at a hotel at all. Just be your own judge.

Took Carnival Spirit out of San Diego a while back and it was wonderful. the ships out of Mobile and Gulf Coast tend to be older and I have heard many complaints.

We just cruised on Carnival in September for the first time and thought the food was mediocre at best. We didn't enjoy Carnival at all and would NOT recommend it to anyone.

Do you mean lately as in the last few years? Because thats how long ago I took what I swore would be my last Carnival cruise. I had a friend getting married aboard ship and my daughter was the flower girl. We departed out of Mobile, and the price was NOT cheap. 3rd & 4th passengers were not discounted at all. We were traveling with an infant, and not only was that fare not discounted, we had to pay extra for her. Those involved in booking and arranging were rude, bordering on hostile. Had the invitations not been mailed out, we would have cancelled. The ship was very shabby, and the food was gross. Everything was just unbelievably tacky. My mother later experienced similar problems on a Carnival cruise out of Florida. She told me the food was lousy (and not even warm) and they changed the itinerary to a different port of call after setting sail and the excursion she had booked was "exchanged" for one she had no interest in, but couldn't get a refund for. I've taken other cruise lines, spent less, and gotten much more. Maybe Carnival is okay if you've never cruised before and don't know how nice it can be, or if you're looking for a discount fast-food wal-mart level type vacation. But for anything nice, they'd have to improve by leaps and bounds to even come close.
