Combine flights & build a cheaper itinerary?

Q. I have been looking for summer airfares from Los Angeles to Madrid for my family for four. Here's my question: when I look on Kayak.com and Orbitz.com I see fares are quite high (at least too high for me) at $1129 round-trip including the tax. However, I see I can fly on many days in July from LA to Washington's Dulles for $238 with tax and from Washington to Madrid on United for $699, saving almost $400 for the four of us. So why didn't the search engines show me this possibility and is there any reason why I can't book two separate fares?

A. First off, summer fares to Europe right now are much higher than they were last summer, especially to Madrid, which was the bargain capital of Europe airfare-wise. So they might come down. I'd try checking in the early spring and keep on checking. Second, most airfare search sites just aren't sophisticated enough yet to combine two different flights on two separate airlines. And third, be sure to leave enough connection time between your flights in case one of them is delayed. In general, it's a somewhat risky business to assume all your flights will operate as scheduled and unless the savings are truly dramatic (or you're willing to overnight in your connecting city to give yourself plenty of wiggle room), the strategy you're suggesting might not be worth it.

Actually, the software at web sites like Orbitz is quite able to find cheaper airfares by pricing by segment, but the airlines have insisted they not do that. If you know there's a cheaper fare via a particular city, if you tell the site to price a multi-leg trip such as LAX-WAS-MAD-WAS-LAX, you can often get them to cough up the fare you want and put it on one itinerary so you can check bags through and have some (not much) recourse in case of missed connections.

Second that. If you don't present yourself at the gate on time, the connecting airline has zero obligation to you.

So, consider building in a very long connection on the return as well.

Another risk (not likely on a LAX-IAD route) is that it is possible that, from a smaller city, the flight into the connecting airport could disappear altogether.

Please call your local travel agent! We can link fares together
for you (many times on different carriers) and get you a better
deal than you can ever get online.

With only one airlines (UAL) flying into Klameth Falls, Oregon we are stuck with their exhorbitant fares, now that Horizon/Alaska have left LMT. How can you find an affordable fare to K. Falls the week of Thanksgiving?

ALWAYS check to see if it's cheaper to book your flight as separate segments. It's worth a try. I feel the poster's pain, as I often fly to Europe from the West Coast. It's expensive. BUT, if you get a little creative and fly a low-cost carrier from the West to the East Coast, then book your Europe flight separate it's often a lot cheaper. Hubs like JFK, BOS, IAD and PHL have national carriers that run specials all the time (remember JFK to MAD on Iberia for $229 RT a few months back!!).

You need to be careful and build in a long layover for peace of mind. Also, it helps to pack light since your bags will NOT be checked all the way to your destination. You have to go down to baggage claim, retrieve bags, check-in again and go through security again. But you could save hundreds of $$$. Good luck.

I definitely recommend you do the 1st leg of your flight one day & overnight in DC & leave on the 2nd leg the next day. Be a DC tourist for a day. The airlines too often change or even cancel flights to depend on any same day connection this far out.

I concur--If you have kids and are anywhere NEAR Wash DC, you want them to get a feel for our nation's capitol. Think of it as two vacations in one. When we went to visit out daughter in Italy last spring, we booked our tickets with a 10 hr layover in Amsterdam. I had been THROUGH Amsterdam 6 times without ever being IN Amsterdam, and it was a wonderful way to see a little of the city.

It's too high now but you can do as proposed- overnight in Wash. even sightsee a little and be more rested when you arrive in Europe.

If you have a long layover in Washington, you can catch the 50 cent local bus to the Air and Space museum which is free.

Still waiting word as to how best to get from Laem Chabang (cruise port in Bangkok) to the city proper for a hotel stay. Is there shuttle service and if not, are taxis reasonable enough. And at what cost? Thank you.

Looking for a flight from ROA or GSO to Barcelona next October. Leaving on a Sunday and returning approximately 2 weeks later. Costs are ridiclious. We are catching a cruise ship on the 6th and want to leave on the 3rd. Any chance of prices going down and when do I get scared and buy?
