Which day of the week and what time to buy?

Q. I've read that the best time of the week to buy airfares is Tuesday. What hour of the day on Tuesday is ideal?

A. Actually, Airfarewatchdog.com doesn't subscribe to the "Tuesday is fare day" theory. We're writing this on a Friday on which several airlines announced new sales, and United launched some amazing unadvertised fares for $160 round-trip coast to coast (that's with tax). The best day to buy fares is when they hit rock bottom on the route you want to fly, and that could be any minute of the week. Sign up for free fare alerts and you'll have a better chance of nabbing a deal.

Is there a site, perhaps afwatchdog, which will email a low fare with dates or even flight numbers to my email? Britt

I agree that you can't be sure which day or time of day is best. I have heard various days mentioned by travel "experts" on t.v. and read travel magazine articles that talked about why this or that day/time was best. The next interview or article gives yet a different day or time! You can't be sure!

I think - every day is a good day. Looking back through my experience - I can't say that a specific day was better or worse for buying tickets. I would say, it is more about lu

I dont find that to be true for Alaska Airlines. They have better prices on tues/wed. The prices from Alaska to the lower 48 are horendous, and sometimes the sales arent sales at all.

Gotta love these spammers! They find their way into everything. And Mickisue, you are right on. Listen up people, if it doesn't pertain to the original question.....you are in the wrong place.

Please, for the love of Mike--this is a THREAD. That means that the comments are supposed to be related to the topic above. IF YOU HAVE A SEPARATE QUESTION send it as a NEW email to the website. You won't get an answer by putting questions in with answers. Does that make sense?

Check out www.farecompare.com/articles/holiday-travel-flight-cutbacks-for-thanksgiving-2009/ - Seat Cutbacks for Thanksgiving 2009
continual downsizing of domestic seats flown over the last several quarters as the airlines first had to cope with fuel prices then more recently with the drop in air travel demand related to the economic recession.
Of course not all seat cutbacks are created equal with some cities incurring the brunt of the downsizing and the follow on of higher airline ticket prices, while passengers in a handful of other cities who have gained seats have hit the jackpot on cheap tickets as both low cost and legacy airlines do battle over a handful of routes
