How to get a particular seat without paying a fee

Q. With more and more airlines charging a fee for advance seat assignments, what advice do you have if you want to avoid the fee but still want a particular seat? I travel by myself, with only carryon baggage. I prefer a window seat, in the back of the plane. Last reclining row, and NEVER over a wing (bad view). I love to get to the airport early, and am usually one of the first on the plane as I don't care how quickly I get off. What are the chances of me getting my preferred seat without paying the fee? And what are the chances if I want a more popular seat (bulkhead aisle)? Even saving ten dollars helps, even if I just get to park a little closer :)

A. Well luckily, most people don't want seats near the last row, so you may not have that much competition. Did you know that seats over the wing tend to experience less turbulence? And most people want to be at the front of the plane so they can get out quicker, or they want exit rows, which are often over the wings. It really depends on how full your flight is. Remember, too, that if you're a loyal frequent flyer, with some airlines you may get precedence in seat selection, no matter how much you pay for your flight. So it pays to fly the same airline exclusively.

On my last USAirways flight a Flight Attendant made an announcement that even though there were preferred seats at the front of the cabin that those of us having not paid to sit in those seats should respect those that had and please do not reseat yourself forward in the cabin!! But, when they have a full flight they will seat anyone, anywhere!

The seatguru website has the layouts of the aircraft for each airline and descriptions of the desirability (or not) of each seat.

If you're passionate about the last reclining window seat, the good news is you likely won't have to pay for it in advance (depending on the airline you fly). On SouthWest of course, you can't select a seat at all in advance. Otherwise, unless you're flying an airline like Spirit, Allegiant or Airtran (I think), you don't have to pay to select seats near the rear. On most of the major traditional carriers, the seats you do have to pay a fee for or in the aisle/window near the front of the economy cabin (on United, for most aircraft, all seats near the front of the cabin), the exit rows and sometimes the bulkheads. Of course, it also depends on how full the flight you are scheduled to be on is. With planes full these days, you may not have to pay for the seat, but all seats could be pre-selected by others.

Many people have tight connections, and would rather be forward so they can get out quicker. Don't be shy about asking someone to trade places. You might make their day better. If nobody will trade, what are you out for asking? The hardest part might be getting their carryon bag forward.

If the seat that you want isn't taken after everyone has boarded, ask the flight attendant if you can move. Also, on Delta, the "preferred seats" such as exit row are sometimes released the morning of the flight & you can change your seat online.

To get the precise seat you want without paying may not always be possible, depending on the airline. But most airlines do allow you to select a seat right away when you purchase the ticket, and only certain seats carry extra fees, even for those airlines that do have the fees. Generally you should be able to get your seat (which is not high priority to most passengers) when you purchase the ticket, assuming someone else doesn't already have it. Click to a seating chart at the airline website and see if your seat is available on the flight you've booked.

Well, how about steering him toward your handy-dandy "other airline fees" chart here: www.airfarewatchdog.com/NEWSADVICE/AirfareWatchBlog/tabid/54/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/1439/Airline-Fee-Charts.asp so one can learn that Alaska, American, Continental, Frontier, Spirit, Southwest, and sometimes JetBlue don't have those fees (yet).

Well goodness Barry92, what would you add? Feel free. We'd love to hear your suggestions or anyone else's. Anyone?

Actually I prefer the seat right behind a bulkhead on the aisle, preferably in seat B or C, depending on configuration, or the another aisle seat on the bulkhead. That way I don't have someone's face sitting in my lap or child throwing something at me and I have more leg room. I don't really care where I pull up my tray or viewing screen as long as they are available and work. You actually have room to work on your laptop, too. And yes I agree with what AFW says about what others prefer. So, I don't think you will have much competition unless the plane is full or the airline assigns the seating from the back as they do on some flights within China.

No offense, AFW, but that response is not very complete or helpful.

I never sit at the back of the plane near the lavs. So you can have those seats hehe.
