International Fares Not Always Equal in Reverse

Q. I'm paying for my sister to fly from New Zealand to Los Angeles, so I checked Air New Zealand's website for airfares. I first looked at fares from Los Angeles to New Zealand, round trip; then realizing that I had to be on the 'New Zealand' side of the website, I looked at fares from NZ to LA. Same flights, sorta, just different starting points. Is there a reason why the plane that would carry my sister here for $993 (NZ$ 1,500) would turn around and carry someone here to NZ for only $746? Again, the fares were round trip, so the same airport fees and surcharges would be factored in to the price.

Is it because there's more demand for getting out of NZ than there is for getting in? Is it because it's winter in NZ and perennially warm in California? Is it because my sister is coming for my wedding and, like the caterers, Air New Zealand is charging more simply because it's wedding related?

A. First off, congratulations! And aren't you a nice to buy your sister's ticket! We say, scrap the caterers and ask her to whip up the food. Two birds, one less expensive stone? No? Ok, well maybe that's a bad idea. Anyhoo...

Until we truly have a global economy, prices will always vary from country to country, depending on the comparative value of currency and local economies. It's similar to when folks from one country flock to another to stock up on luxury goods for half the price they'd find at home. The same applies to airfares. airlines charge whatever they think the market will bear, based on passenger loads, competition, seasonality,  and other factors. In general, also, the airport fees and other fees leaving from a foreign airport will not be identical to those leaving from a US airport.

The NZ portal is how I found the original price, so doing that didn't help. Wholesale-flights.com doesn't seem to do international flights. Thanks for the suggestions, nonetheless. So, in the end, it appears to be a case of supply and demand, and caterer's logic.

Thanks as well to the folks who also noticed this discrepancy -- it's nice to know that I'm not the only one.

JUST FOUND YOUR WEBSITE----TRYING TO BOOK A ONE WAY--
WHY AM I NOT ABLE TO???? IT DOESN'T EVEN ASK IF ITS ONE WAY OR RT.

Although I find this practice unfair, it seems to be common practice with most airlines. I have bought tickets for relatives coming from Colombia to the states and I get frustrated that flights are always $200 to $400 more than flying from the states to there.

Have you tried booking from their NZ web portal? In other words, don't log on to the US site, but use the NZ site: http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/

Sometimes the fares are better (since they'll keep the bargains for their own country) and you'll pay in their currency, which I believe is trading weaker than the dollar right now. Sneaky, but the airlines are sneaky too. Beat them at their own game!

Yup... same applies to fares from the US to Australia.. sometimes REALLY good deals, but RARELY in reverse when Kids and Grandkids want to come here! Frustrating...

I travel frequently from LA to NZ - fares are always cheaper flying Air New Zealand or Quantas out of LA .. more expensive from New Zealand to LA due to exchange of money etc.

I too think this i absolutely ridiculous. My husband and I live in Ecuador, so we frequently travel from Guayaquil to the US. Delta is one that is terrible about a different rate depending on where you leave from. Flying from Atlanta to Guayaquil cost my family around $500-$600 per ticket, which is a good price. But if you want to book the reverse, from Guayaquil to Atlanta, they charge double the price! $1100!!! This is the SAME flight!!! they don't get our business!!!
