Sitting Biz Class without paying Biz Class

Q. What's the deal with Y-Up and Q-Up fares?

A. These are restricted (as in there is a cancellation/change penalty) economy class fares that are cheaper than full fare economy class, and seated in first or business class.

You can find them on Travelocity or on the airline's web sites directly by choosing business or first class with restrictions when you do your search, or you can call the airlines directly and ask for them.

They are not offered on all routes, and they're not exactly cheap, but hey, they're definitely less than those refundable full fare economy fares, and you get to sit in business/first class.

These fares can be especially handy for business travelers looking to skirt office policy against buying business class fares.

If you want to travel biz class on international flights, and YOU are paying for it, become a member of a frequent flyer program where you can buy unlimited miles. Alaska Airlines (partners with a LOT of other airlines) Mexicana (partners with many, including some that fly to Asia) both sell unlimited miles, and you can book a flight in biz class with purchased miles. For about $1000 less than it costs to get a restricted fare for cash. The downside, of course, is that you don't earn miles when you travel with FF miles. But biz class fares cost 100,000 miles or more for international travel. And miles are worth about 2.5 to 3 cents a piece. So contrast the 9000 miles -- worth about $250--to the saved $1000. I'll take that, any day.
