Why not fill those empty seats?

Q. I know many airlines have weekend specials (rarely all that special) to try and fill empty seats. Why don't they offer any TRUE last minute deals? For instance, there is/was an airline in Germany that allowed potential passengers to come to the airport, bags packed, and they'd be booked on any open flights with empty seats, and at deep deep discounts. The hitch was that passengers wouldn't know where they might be going until moments before boarding.

So why don't our airlines reduce fares for last minute travel? Doesn't it make more sense for them to fill a half empty plane and make some money off those seats? Or are they concerned passengers will begin waiting until the last few hours to try and catch a good deal?

A. In the past, a number of years ago, many airlines did allow passengers to wait at the airport for last minute booking of travel at substantial savings. This has been discontinued mainly because they have gotten much more efficient at filling seats and reducing/increasing capacity on routes, mostly due to their ability to track numbers and trends more quickly. Another factor, the price of fuel has reached the point where it's probably cheaper to fly a lighter plane than just fill seats for a small payment.

I received an e-mail recently from you regarding a flight for $168 from GRR to PNS round trip. The deadline to travel is March 16. How do I find this flight. I have attempted on 3 different days, and I am unable to get to this flight. How do I get to this great deal????? Please help! Also I tried to contact you via e-mail; however that didn't work either. I sure would appreciate any help you can offer.

I can't believe that the marginal last few passengers change the fuel equation that much, even with their baggage. Compared to the weight of the plane, fuel, and all the other pre-booked passengers, a handful to a dozen extra stragglers isn't that much extra weight.

There's no way they would start that again, since they now over-book flights assuming some people will not make it. When they all show up someone gets bumped!

I have been on plenty flights on Friday evenings to popular and non popular destinations with tons of empty seats. I alway wondered why they didn't drop that $1,000 fare at the last minute to make at least some $$$$.

And remember when you could fly coast to coast on the TWA red-eyes - hand carry baggage only because the cargo was for overnight cargo only - this was around when FedEx was getting popular...

Oh - and I TOTALLY agree. The efares that come out on Wednesday's are a joke and not really deals.

Part of it, too, is the new airline "security" (and I use the term loosely. Used to be, you could go to the airport, hang out at the gate and, if there was an empty seat, get on for next to nothing. Now you need a ticket to get through security.

I used to, back in the day, wait until Wednesday when the e-fares came out, go through the lists and just get on whichever weekend flight was leaving out of town (we don't get a lot of bargain flights - small city). If there was more than one, I'd take the cheapest.

It was great fun and I saw a lot of places I wouldn't plan on seeing.

Now the e-fares aren't even that great.

I know what you mean. I once got a flight from St. Louis to Honolulu PLUS three nights lodging at the Turtle Bay Hilton for $360. You just don't see awesome deals like that anymore... :(

Plus, people in the States are not as adventurous as our European cousins. I would love to go somewhere and not know where until the last minute; however, most of my friends would not.

Yeah, and they OVERBOOK flights counting on some people not showing up or not making their connections, so they just don't have as many empty seats.
