D.I.Y. International Connections

Q. I need to book airfare from Miami to Madrid, then a connecting flight from Madrid to Jerez. My sister did some digging for me and it appears that we will need to clear passport control in Madrid before continuing on to Jerez. Based on this information, how much time would you recommend we allow between connecting flights?

A. You never know what may come up with international travel, especially if the airline that flies you to Madrid doesn't have an interlining agreement with the airline that flies you to Jerez - in which case, you'll have to collect your luggage and re-check it, once you're done waiting in line at customs. The Madrid airport is pretty big, and you might want to to read the Skytrax user reviews to get an idea of what other travelers have dealt with when passing through Madrid

Booking a flight straight through to Jerez would certainly more expensive, but much less of a hassle. Another benefit is that if it's one itinerary under the auspices of one airline entity, they are responsible for any delays or missed connections. Still, if you're intent on spending as little as possible, definitely go with booking onward with the local budget airlines or even trains. Just be sure to leave plenty of time - PLENTY! The last time we made a similar trip, we decided to play it extra safe and just stay overnight in our connecting city before traveling on.

I recommend *twice* the time you *think* you'll need to get through passport control, claim your luggage, recheck it, etc. The lines always seem to be long when I'm there anyway LOL It took me nearly an hour to get through passport control alone when I went to London in 2007.

I am going on an upcoming trip with a round trip ticket to London, and then a one way to Rome later in the afternoon (we're traveling back by train) and I'm allowing myself a five hour layover at Heathrow. I would rather be sick of the airport than miss my connection. It saved me about $400 to do it this way, and I could use my frequent flier miles to get upgraded to business on the international round trip portion. For some reason BA's website won't let you use miles on a ticket that isn't a simple round trip.

So just allow a LOT of extra time if it's not all on one ticket. :D

you can take an AVE train from Madrid to Sevilla - terrific, fast train - then a short bus hop to Jerez - train leaves from Atocha station, which you can reach via subway from Barajas

The easiest thing would be to get a connecting flight through to Jerez. It'll cost more, but it's worth the lessened hassle. I think 3 hrs would be enough time (at least, that's my comfort zone) b/c Madrid Barajas is pretty big.

You should also check for bus service from Madrid to Jerez. When I studied in Granada, I took the bus to Malaga, Cordoba, and to Madrid because the train system in Spain is not as good as countries like Italy and France. I relied on Alsina Graells (Sur?) for bus service there, but there are some other companies too. Good luck, and have a wonderful trip. Southern Spain is a beautiful place.

Actually the train sounds like a good alternative. I have had so many flights canceled in the past year that I would be afraid of missing the connection even after allowing a reasonable amount of time. Would it be possible to buy a cheap air ticket from Madrid to Jerez at the counter instead of in advance? That way you wouldn't be stuck with a ticket you couldn't use if the flight to Madrid was delayed or canceled. Good luck.

I recently flew Iberia from a states to Rome, with a connecting stop in Madrid that involved Customs clearance. The time betwen flights was 2 hours, and I needed all of it. This included a 40 minute walk from the arrival gate, getting through customs, and getting to the connecting gate)
