Traveling with Liquid & Gel Medications exceeding 3 ounces

Q. So, I have a "friend" who recently spent a long weekend in Belize after finding one of those $160 round-trip tickets through Airfarewatchdog late last fall. This friend, who -full disclosure - works at Airfarewatchdog, and happens to love dogs, foolishly posed for a pic alongside a scrappy scabby beach dog. What was my friend thinking? I'm not sure! But after contracting ringworm (in his beard! Eww) my friend has learned his lesson. Now my friend has been prescribed a massive tube of cream that most certainly exceeds 3 ounces. Is this something the TSA will allow in his carry-on for an upcoming flight? Or will my friend have to check it? Should he ask the doctor for tiny sample size tubes?

A. While we're glad you were able to snag one of those great fares to Belize, sorry to hear about your sad fungus fiasco. But good news! According to the TSA site, travelers with medical conditions may bring gels and liquids related to their condition, just so long as these items are declared if they exceed 3 ounces and are not contained in a one-quart plastic bag. So it should be no problem. However, given all the many reports of TSA inconsistencies, it's probably a good idea to bring along a note from your doctor, even if your medication is labeled, just to be on the absolute safe side. Especially if traveling overseas.

You can find more on this over on the TSA's site. Good luck!

1st things first - if you have a trip and the misconnect will cause you to miss the event, it is called a "trip in vain" if they can't get you there and most airlines will give you a full refund with no fees. At any rate, due to the same issue the rebooking should have been fee free. The second time, they probably won't wiggle, but it never hurts to ask. I would definitely write a nice letter and try, they can be reasonable (I was a very reasonable agent for many years).

I have given your website to so many people. I'll quote a price in the office and always someone asks WHAT?
Were you the site that some time ago posted a listing of all the airline customer service complaint desks with names and phone #s? I tried asking Frommers and have not received a reply. The list suggested a polite well written letter usually got a reply/refund/callback etc. My tale of woe is with US Airways. My son and I last March were on the last flight of the night from SBA to Charleston S.C. connect in Las Vegas and Charlotte. The plane does not arrive in SBA for over an hour. Well now the connect. is missed and the trip is cancelled by me as my son needed to be testing at the Citadel at a cerrtain time. Cost then was about $385 ea. US AIR says go ahead and rebook and we'll not add the $100 ea. rebook fee. Fine Weeks later we are told what the final tuition would be. $40,000 a year. Cant afford it so we cancel the rebooked tickets. Now US Air has over $1000 in ticket fees, wants another $100 ea. and time is running out on useage of one year. AND now fares are lower to everywhere! I just want to travel but not be ripped for 5-600 bucks for a $250 today fare! Not asking for a refund just fair trip credits. Think I've got a chance?

Do airlines open up frequent flyer seats in any order prior to the flights?
