My wife was booked an a Tuesday morning flight from Los Angeles to Calgary, where she was to meet me at a conference that evening. American Airlines cancelled her flight without so much as offering to book her on a later flight that day. Instead they booked her on a flight departing the following day, which didn't work for us. So my wife booked a $500 flight on Air Canada, leaving that day, and later used the second half of her original American ticket to return home. I asked American to reimburse us for the $500 Air Canada ticket, which they refused to do, saying they did try and book her on that next day flight. What recourse do I have here? Any suggestions? A. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do in this case. American's cancellation policy is among the vaguest in the industry, which allows them a lot of wiggle room: When cancellations and major delays are experienced, you will be rerouted on our next flight with available seats. Other airlines will rebook you on another flight with another airline, but not American. Here's a little something from our blog addressing the very same situation. Maybe this will help you choose which airline gets your business from here on out. Post a Comment
yes american airlines sucks, they are not competitive & we encourage using other airlines that are. also their mileage club is one of the worst, expiring your hard earned miles without notice. by world traveler on Tuesday, December 28, 2010
Instead of going to Air Canada, you should have gotten on the phone w/American, and, armed with the flights that you knew were leaving that day, insist on being re-booked on one of them. Ask if there are seats open in first class. If there are, that satisfies their own rule. The key is to be patiently and pleasantly assertive; the smiling broken record works wonders in dealing with airlines. One thing that I've used to my advantage is this phrase, "That doesn't work for me, I need you to do X instead." If I cannot get satisfaction from the person I'm talking with, after the broken record technique has been employed several times, I ask for his/her superior, with this statement, "I understand that you don't have the authority to grant me what's needed. Please connect me with your supervisor." Frequently, that will sting enough to get them to either change their offer, or consult with their superior and get the OK to grant what I need. It's really not reasonable to independently book a last minute fare on another airline, and go back and expect the first airline to pay for it. It would be akin to ordering a pair of pants from an online store, and when they don't fit, going to your local fancy store that costs 5 times as much, buying pants there, and then telling the online store that you want them to pay for them. by mickisue on Tuesday, December 28, 2010
I've received emails with great rates, but when I go to search they are nowhere to be found even when I put in a random dates 4 months out and within 30 days flexibility. Am I doing something wrong? by iluv2fly on Wednesday, December 10, 2008
We've traveled with our 5 lb dog before on United and a few years ago, it cost about $50 each way to have her under the seat in front of us. A few months ago, thinking that we would take her with us to CA (leaving from Massachusetts), we looked up the new price and found that it will now cost around $80 each one. Yesterday, we looked up United's pet policy and found out that it has gone up to $175 permanently! This is outrageous!
