International Flexible Search

Q. I'm curious: What regulations and/or software restrictions prevent one from using a "flexible date search" function for international travel?

A. That would be the US Department of Transportation. They asked that Travelocity include those often hefty fuel surcharges in their international fare results; but Travelocity said that they didn't have the technology to do this, since these and other taxes and surcharges are calculated when exact dates are chosen by the consumer. But now, Travelocity is indeed showing international flexible date search results on some major routes, but not all. Seems like the list is growing day by day.

You can use flexible date search for international travel on Orbitz.com to almost anywhere, although Orbitz does not have all of the low cost international airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair; on Travelocity, you can do international flex date search on some routes.

QANTAS and British Airways have flexible international searches with all inclusive totals. I use them all the time. Looks like it's just the usual U.S. not keeping up with the rest of the world trick.

Try skyscanner, it does flexible searches and has a map if you're just looking to go somewhere in a region. The map is heavy duty though, so takes a while to load up.

Kayak does a 7-day flexible international search, provides the ticket seller and has a very handy tool "buzz" to find the best fares anywhere at any time .... I like and use it a lot !
However, again they don't include foreign airlines.

All other, including US airlines can be found on Skyscanner.net which also lets you search from country to country and includes Easyjet, Ryanair, Air Berlin, Condor etc.
So does Momondo.com and many other (foreign) search aggregators that I like to use.

Just did a flexible date search to Paris on NWA.com, so some individual airlines DO let you do that. One thing NWA does that I wish others would do is the price they give INCLUDES taxes, etc. If they say $198 RT, that's what it is. Delta and most others say $150 RT (so you think you're getting a better deal) but it actually comes to $218 or some such . . .

QPX from www.itasoftware.com permits flexible date searches for international travel, and quotes prices including all taxes, etc. It doesn't sell tickets but is often a good place to start searching.
