Current posts | CategoriesEarly Departures, Stranded PassengersQ: We checked in for our flight an hour before take off time, got our boarding passes from an automated kiosk, and proceeded through security. When we got to the gate, there were no seats, so we went to a nearby food court area and had a cup of coffee and a bagel. About five minutes before the final boarding time (when they were supposedly going to shut the doors) we presented ourselves for boarding but guess what: they had shut the door, and detached the Jetway. They would not let us on. It seems that everyone was on board (except us) and they decided to close the flight a few minutes early in order to ensure an on time arrival. Is this some new kind of airline policy? Are all airlines doing this? Post a Comment
It was several years ago that I was flying to Memphis on Northwest making a connection in Minneapolis. We landed right on time but the MPLS airport had oversold their gate space so we sat in the airplane for 45 minutes waiting for a plane to vacate a gate so we could unload. When one finally pulled away and we unloaded I discovered that the plane that pulled away was my flight to Memphis. At least I was only stuck for 4 hours and was able to finally get to my destination. They were both Northwest flights. Somethings never change. by Spudley on Wednesday, December 30, 2009
If you have been a reader of Airfare Watchdog, you know that you are pushing it if you book international connections with less than a minimum of two hours to connect between flights.
Personally, I prefer more. People, the airlines are responsible for getting you to and from, that's true. But if they offer a connection that YOU are uncomfortable with, YOU are responsible for speaking up and doing something about it. Sheesh. We're not little kids. by mickisue on Tuesday, December 29, 2009
The airlines all do these things David. We were on Continental and late for European connection due to their hold , ran to gate--too late, got to see plane leaving gate. Result was three miserable days in Newark Airport!!! Finally caught a standby over but it was the worst airline experience I ever had. If you come from a small market airport you are screwed by connections that don't happen due to airline's fault! by oldsam on Tuesday, December 29, 2009
US Airways did a similar thing to us. There flight was late to Kansas City, arrived late in Philly, & they knew we were arriving late by their fault (also, they picked the original itenary so if there was not enough time between flights that was their fault). We arrived at the gate after almost running through the Philly terminal. The plane was there but the gate was closed early. There were 8 passengers waiting to get on the flight to Spain. The story gets worst & worst. We will never fly US Airways again. by David on Monday, December 28, 2009
Well, I think most people fail in their responsibility to be on time. Everyone knows that airlines begin boarding 30 min prior to take off. Gates change (sometimes even from what is printed on your ticket!) The bottom line is, if you want to get somewhere...pay attention. Don't expect that the airline is going to hold your hand through the process. by feketkutyak on Monday, December 28, 2009
Actually, since passengers can now check in 24 hours ahead, online, checked in just means that you have claimed your boarding pass. The information that you receive states that for domestic flights you are required to be checked in AND in the boarding area 30 minutes before the posted departure time. You are usually not held to that, but you can be, as you found out. by mickisue on Monday, December 28, 2009
The same thing almost happened to us! We were in Miami, checked in, went through Security, and had at least an hour to kill before the start boarding time listed on our tickets. So, we decided to go over to the next terminal for a few drinks. 45 minutes later, as we were meandering through our terminal, we heard, "Final boarding call for Mr and Mrs such and such!". We ran like hell to our gate, screaming our names. Seemed they boarded early, and the flight crew wanted to leave. They had passengers on stand by, and were ready to give them our seats! I don't understand this: we checked in!!! Doesn't checking in literally mean hey hello we are here, don't give away our seats????? by on Friday, August 08, 2008
