Star Alliance Miles: Reading the Fine Print

Q. My daughter and I recently completed a trip from Denver to Stockholm on SAS/United. The SAS portion is giving me just 25% of the miles earned. No where on my itinerary can I find information stating that my economy fare does this. In fact, when I click on airline conditions and terms it states there are none provided.I am a United Premier Member. I was counting on these 6000 miles to get Premier Executive status by fall. Any suggestions?

A. Unfortunately, SAS does clearly state this policy on their website:

The principle is simple, the more you spend the more points you earn. For the cheapest tickets you will earn 25% of the points you earn for a normal Economy ticket, check how many points you earn in our earn points table.

I fly NW to Toyko (Narita) last Dec. and received 100% of the miles flown to my Alaska Air account. Of the mileage programs I belong too, they have been the best.

More bad news, I'm afraid. Though it would perhaps be unreasonable to ask you to go to the SAS site to see the mileage rules if you booked your ticket through United and want to earn United miles, the United site also shows that you only get 25% credit for discounted economy when you fly SAS as a United/Star Alliance partner.

If your overseas segments were booked with a United flight number (as a SAS codeshare), you might have a slightly better case for 100% credit, but if it's a SAS flight number, I think you're out of luck unless you get a very, very nice customer service rep who's willing to bend the rules just to accommodate you. If you don't otherwise make Premier Executive, I'd suggest that you plead for the status level, but not the mileage credit, based on the fact that you flew the distance. Again, they don't appear to really owe you this, but it's probably easier for them to give you status than miles.

It's the same on AAdvantage when flying British Air--you get the miles according to BA's policy, not American, so when flying to Cairo from London, I received only 25%. Maddening!

Your link to the website is broken. Here is the correct URL:

the only suggestion i can offer is contact customer service and pose the question. a few years ago, i signed up for the miles with NW i believe. this was done after booking the ticket. i sent email to customer service and they added to my account.
granted, they may not do this, but it will only take 1 email for a response. if they dont grant it, they will specifically state why.
