Potential Kinks in AA's New Bag Fee Plan

Q. I've noticed before that when you're in the last boarding group and there's no room in the overhead racks, that the flight attendants will offer to check your bag in. Of course, that was before American Airline's new $15 check-in policy. Now what happens when the situation I described occurs?

A. Good question!  We imagine those often ignored carry-on guidelines will now be strictly enforced, with passengers being asked to squeeze their carry-ons into those tiny metal size-guideline contraptions, the ones that no one ever uses. Will they go the route of European low cost carriers, with a scale to see if your carry-on bag is overweight, and charge you for that too? Will there be enough room in the overhead bins for everyone trying to avoid the fee? Maybe the flight crew will be equipped with charge card swipers, and bill you from the cabin, if bags prove too bulky for the overhead.  We have a feeling this may not work out  very smoothly and that maybe AA hasn't thought this through entirely.

All this reminds me of People's Express. Remember them? You paid for each checked bag (of course, it was only $3 each), you paid for your soda and your snack.

You even paid for your ticket in-air.

This would all have a possibility of working much better if they would stop people from putting their bags in the first available place when they get on the plane, rather than putting their bags in their own row section of the plane. Can't tell you how many times I have not had a place to put my own bag in forward of cabin because someone decided to be lazy rather than responsible and taking their bag back to their own row to stow.

If airlines are to charge a fee, they should charge a fee to those carrying on small suitcases. When a passenger carries a suitcase into the cabin it increases his/her convenience but decreases the convenience for other passengers. If we want to incentivize orderliness and also raise revenue from those enjoying an extra convenience, then tax the people with the large carry-ons!
