Mind those Miles!

Q. I recently reviewed my United Frequent Flyer account on-line to redeem miles for an upcoming flight. I was told that I had lost all miles in my account due to inactivity.  My options were to either pay for a qualifying flight AND pay $199 to reinstate my miles or get the United Visa card and again pay $199 to reinstate my miles. I was told by the customer service rep that paying the $199 was a “really good deal” given the number of miles I have in my account that would be otherwise lost. I have a few months to mull it over before the miles will be permanently deleted. This seems to be a very poor way to treat someone that has been a frequent flyer since 1985!  Am I simply stuck with paying $199? What other options are there – if any?

A. As annoying as it may seem, this is typical of most mileage programs. Going forward, here's an easy way to preserve your hard-earned frequent flyer miles, without having to book a trip or shelling out another $199. All it takes is a little shopping. You'll find many companies that are affiliated with the airlines' online shopping programs. No need to buy anything expensive. Even a piddly little three-ring binder from Staples.com, or a single song from iTunes or a pair of jeans from Target.com, and your miles are active for another year to 18 months. Easy! Check out our handy article on preserving miles with online shopping.

I haven't flown United in a couple of years, but I've kept my account active by purchasing a magazine subscription using my miles. Just one or two a year is enough to keep the account going.

I received 1,000 miles after using Delta's online shopping for a Christmas purchase. Nice to get something in return for spending my money!

If your miles have expired, it means you haven't flown United or a partner airline in over 18 months. The airline credit card (Mileage Plus Visa) is an option as is shopping in the MileagePlus online mall. Also, US Airways, Air Canada, and a host of other Star Alliance airlines can earn you United miles. If you fly any of these airlines, just provide your United frequent flyer number before traveling. See http://www.unitedDOTCOM/page/article/0,6722,1177,00.html for the full list of partner airlines. Or, opt for an airline where the miles don't expire. In the last year or two, Delta Airlines eliminated it's mileage expiration policy... miles on Delta no longer expire after 18 months.

You can set your computer's calendar to remind you a month or two BEFORE the miles are set to expire.

Instead of purchasing something you don't need, donate 1,000 or more miles to a charity. It accomplishes the same thing and you'll feel good about it.

You don't get bonus miles shopping in person and showing your number to a salesclerk. You have to shop online through that airline's portal. You can use any credit card as long as you access the retailers through the airline site. Of course, if you use that airline's credit card you'll get even more miles.

Do I understand correctly, I will get bonus miles at selected retailers by showing my milage account number. (NOT an airline credit card)?

Yeah, kind of rookie move for a guy with miles starting in 1985. It's so easy to earn miles these days, it's amazing how people let them expire. Attach your debit card to United's Reward Dining program and you could earn miles just by going out to eat. Doesn't even have to be a fancy restaurant. (Burger King is listed!!). Also, shopping is a great way to keep them. Buying flowers, candy or anything special for a loved one this Valentine's? FTD (the floral people) are offering 20 miles per dollar spent. That's extremely generous and you could easily score 800-1000 or more points that way.
