I planned a trip for my son and I to DC to try to avoid the tangle of Thanksgiving by flying out the Saturday before the holiday and returning the day after eating too much turkey. Both flights were easy, uncrowded, and an overall pleasure.
Getting thru security at Dulles on the return was about five minutes and the planes were not even full. That's not happened to me in quite a long time. Our plane didn't take off on Friday until about 6PM which may have also helped.
If you can juggle the dates it's worth it.
