“OK experience for the flight, great pilot!”

The reason why this was a one-way is because of their check-in policy. United is adamant about cutting off check-in at exactly 2 hours before international departure. I also fly Cathay Pacific and Air Canada. They have no problem with passengers checking in as late as 40 minutes before international departures, if they think you have sufficient time to go through airport security and show up at the gate before boarding calls (they probably shouldn't wait too long for you). Most airlines respect their passengers. So for flying a bit cheaper (about US$400 less than direct flight, return trip) with United, I ended up paying one-way full fare (about US$1,600) to fly Cathay Pacific back to Canada. For the record, I was at the city check-in counter 1 hour 40 minutes before departure, plenty of time to get to the gate for any other airlines.
Back to the Chicago-Hong Kong leg. The in-flight experience was OK. The flight staff were young and friendly. The food has dropped to average from above average in 2009.
What impressed me most was the pilot! The plane was delayed in Chicago (definitely not because of me), but we arrived Hong Kong early. And SMOOTH AS SILK LANDING. I was not able to detect actual touch down for the first time in all my flying experiences. The pilot must have flown the Blue Angels before or my other guess is that he was an ace instructor. Very, very impressive performance!

“Making the Best of a Long Flight”

Once again, Air Canada does not disappoint. Decent food, great new movies, comfortable seats and lots and lots of service as you wish, or not. This is a brutally long direct flight but the crew on board do their very best to make it as comfortable as possible. I'd definitely go this route rather than the Vancouver or LA and then Hong Kong route again.

It was long flight but the ride was comfortable, it was on time. I would fly AC again to HKG.
