We waited on the ground for 2 hrs. before 1st flight left from Philadelphia. Also waited on ground for about an hour once we landed in Philadelphia on our return. Then baggage was delayed for about 45 min. so after running to the gate for our connecting flight,we found the door closed and no one at desk. "Customer Services" rep was rude, not at all helpful. After more passengers who were also delayed by the airline arrived, the pilot let us board and find a seat anywhere we could. Probably the biggest complain was the lack of leg room on the long flight to Rome. That made our flight the most uncomfortable we have experienced in years of traveling!

The first leg of the flight (SFO to London, Heathrow) was late enough to cause us to miss our London-to-Rome connection. Not the airline's fault, but due to the volcano. The flight attendants let us moved up to the front of the plane before landing, so we could get off quickly, in case we could make it. When we got off the plane (too late to make the connection), there were United employees waiting to hand us boarding passes for the next flight to Rome. It was enough to (almost) make me forgive United for some of their past mistakes.
