In my opinion the flight attendants upstairs seem to be nicer as opposed to their counterparts down on the main level. If you are fwd facing you even get to see the cockpit when the pilots have to stretch their legs, of course they put the little gate up to make sure no one tries to go in for a closer look. The lay flat beds are comfortable and I am always able to get at least 5hrs of sleep to and from NRT. I've also done this rout in economy when I have traveled in a group and that is not my idea of fun. I would rather travel a foreign carrier if I had to fly coach all the time. More leg room and better food/service.

“United's international service improving”

I've flown this route countless times. It is bearable in economy plus. The attitude of the flight attendants seems to have improved in flights this last year. I'm seeing smiles at most contacts and a seeming genuine willingness to provide constant water and respond to call buttons for other requests. That is a big improvement for United. I actually prefer flying United on the transpacific route over, say, Singapore air for 2 reasons: my status gets me the extra room of economy plus seating which doesn't exist on SingAir and I hate the fact that Singapore Air does not show you an available seating chart until after your ticket purchase. I often base my choice of departure dates and flights on United on the likelihood of having an empty adjacent seat. Of course, there is never a guarantee of this but I was able to stretch out across 3 seats on the long SFO-NRT leg as I'd hoped when I chose this flight. Makes a huge difference in how much of an ordeal the flight is. This last time I even thought the quality of the food improved. Very little difference in the quality of the coach food as compared to Singapore Air (which is nothing special, really.)
