I chose Southwest for the latest of my usual bi-annual trips to the East Coast where I grew up. The reason I did so was that in my own small way I was revolting against the major carrier's excessively high checked baggage fees. I am a senior and can no longer place my 30 to 40 lb bag in the overhead racks with ease. I could live with the $5.00 fee each way originally charged by the major carriers to check a piece of luggage; however, when they went to $25.00 per bag in each direction, I decided that enough was enough and that I was going to do something about it! I have flown Southwest (a no-fee baggage carrier) before; but, only for short hops here and there in the West. This last time (11/8) I flew on a weekday from Sacramento via Denver to Hartford thinking that the flights might be a bit less crowded than if I was to fly on either a Friday or a Sunday. How wrong I was! Every seat on both legs of my trip were sold out. My return (11/16) flights from Hartford via Las Vegas to Sacramento were only slightly less crowded than my outbound ones. Because of all this, I am guessing that Southwest must be doing something right to get this many passengers on what normally should be an off day for travel.
I strongly feel that the $25.00 checked baggage fee charged by the major carriers over and above the air fare in each direction is discriminatory to seniors and until they change this policy, I will no longer fly with them.
