My family and I tried to take this flight twice in May. The first time, May 8, we had a mechanical issue at the gate that was supposedly fixed and we pushed back from the game only about an hour late. Then we sat in line to take off for a couple hours. Just when we were about to take off something hydraulic went out and they took us back to the game. After about 45 minutes there (getting us just under the 3 hour limit), they decided it would be a while before it was fixed and let us out into the terminal. About 2 hours later they cancelled the flight. Their rebooking process was a disorganized mess. There were competing Delta employees-- some saying to stay in line where we were, some saying to go to the rebooking center. Some passengers were led to various places in the terminal for another 3 hours before they were helped. Luckily (or not) we were rebooked almost immediately (I was at the front of the line) for the same flight the next night.
We boarded almost on time the next night, May 9, and were on the runway taking off when they aborted takeoff. Yes, aborted. Almost taking off, then slamming on the breaks and aborting. It was pretty scary. They told us an engine was having trouble. They pulled us back to the game, let us out, and said they were getting a new plane. They got a new plane, and just when we were about to board they said the crew was going to time out and we would have to wait for another crew to come sometime around 3 or 4am. How very convenient a timeframe so that Delta did not have to pay for any hotel rooms! They did offer to rebook us for another day, but we could not get to Milan for a few days because the flights were full. We ended up being rebooked for a flight to Pisa on May 10.
After all this, Delta would not even talk to us about our baggage until we arrived in Pisa. They said our bags would go to Milan and we would have to fill out lost baggage paperwork after we got there. They would do nothing to help us before that.
This was only my 6th time to fly Delta. And it was my 6th time on Delta to have major cancellation/baggage/customer service issues. After this, I have given myself an ultimatum-- I'm never flying Delta again!
