Everyone understands when something happens to delay a flight (weather, aircraft servicing, other flights delayed, etc.). But it was ridiculously frustrating when we landed in Chicago for our "hour" layover to return to Milwaukee and were kept in the dark about our flight for nearly 4 hours. Our MKE flight was scheduled for 6pm departure. It was bumped back (we only noticed it on the screen, no human ever told us what was happening or that our flight time changed, even though we were sitting 10 feet away from them at the gate for four hours). The time changed multiple times before we were herded to a different gate where we were greeted by a screaming United personnel, telling us to get on the plane (but the plane was going to NE). This was now about 8pm, two hours after our scheduled departure time. We then were told to go down some stairs, and outside and across several gates to board our plane. We then proceeded to sit on the plane for another hour with limited updates from the flight crew. And when they would update us, they gave us false hope and incorrect info regarding when we'd be in flight.
From Chicago to Milwaukee is a two hour drive. We were kept waiting for 4 hours to take a plane. Had we been given proper info, many of us would have chose to get a bus or rental car to just drive back to Milwaukee, which is fine, because we understand things happen. But because NO ONE felt the need to update us about this United flight, we spent twice the amount of time it would have taken to drive to Milwaukee, sitting in an airport feeling frustrated. It made United seem very impersonal and disorganized. I will be choosing a different airline in the future.
