we flew american rather than foreign airlines to support our fellow citizens. Sadly, it was a mistake. The plane configuration was the most crowded we have ever experienced . I am barely six feet tall but to turn in my seat or cross my legs I had to half stand up in order to have sufficient space to do so. the flight is about nine hours. after all passengers were boarded(on both flights) there was a delay of about 30 to 40 minutes before leaving the gate area . on the flight down service was marginal. On the flight back the whole experience was worse. the crew was borderline rude, the overhead lights did not work. so they put on a video but the sound didn't work. Accessing a crew member on the homeward flight was ridiculous. in uruguay we attended some expat get togethers-very helpful and informative. when asked which airline we flew and we answered american a collective whoop went up from the groups and their response was "oh, the cattle car" That says it all. The choice airline of fellow travelers was Lan.Not withstanding the flights, ururguay is a friendly, safe country with beautiful people and beaches. It is guite reasonably priced. we plan to return
