Allegiant has a direct flight to/from my home city in Grand Rapids, MI to Las Vegas which is a huge plus. And I regularly get price alerts that Allegient is the cheapest flight to Vegas. BUT.... all is not what it seems.
When booking the flight the price seemed perfect roughly $250. But it is not until you reserve the flight that you see the impact of taxes, services fees, checked baggage fees (do online with your ticket to pre-pay $25 not $45 at check-in), and pay to pick a seat. I had almost another $100 in fees by the time I was done. It made it hard to compare other flight options/cost at the time you make your flight choices because you don't really know what your total cost is going to be.
When checking in at the Las Vegas airport I was surprised to see a very long line "outside" the airport (skycab) for those who are checking baggage. The inside line (to check-in) is only for carry on baggage passangers. So we waited outside in line. The line moved relatively quickly and the skycabs were excellent. Very personable, friendly and happy to assist us. Not only did they check-in our bags, but processed our boarding passes. They accept tips (of course they do...it's Vegas) but they were well worth it.
The boarding process was pleasant. We had paid for seat assignments so we were one of the first groups to board. The captain pleasantly announced that we would have a strong tail wind going home and should be about 30 minutes early. That was until we sat on the tarmack 45 extra minutes because the head count of passagers did not match the number of ticket stubs. They counted 3 times, which must of been the charm because we finally pulled away from the jetbrigde. The 30 minutes early land time turned out to be 1 hour late flight.
One last thing, be sure to buy snacks and drinks before you board your plane. Nothing is free on Allegiant. A can of soda cost $2.00. I didn't even to bother to ask how much the peanuts were. Enjoy your flight.
