I was required to purchase a more expensive coach flight to use a "free" first class upgrade certificate earned with business points miles. The reservation agent gave me incorrect information 2 times which resulted in me not having a reserved upgrade to first class. Luckily, the check-in agent was very helpful and was able to obtain the last first class seat for my flight (with a wonderful attitude, I might add). The service on the flight was slightly better than coach class. Meal was ho-hum (but at least there was a meal). The seats and legroom were far more comfortable than coach and it was easier to work on the flight. Certainly better than coach but not as good as other first class experiences.

Everything went as expected. No problems with check-ins and boarding. Legroom at seat was adequate. Gate for final destination was close by so very little extra walking.

Hot airplane, gassy customers, 2 1/2 hr. late departure on second segment. But by far, the worst was the return flight. CLT to LAS via ATL. Monitors read delay in ATL due to wx, so we find agent to try to make alternate plans. She was alone, had cranky customers 10 deep, we get to speak to her after waiting one hour. When it was our turn, she had to leave for a restroom break! She was embarrassed, but at the breaking point. We gave her a bottle of water on her return. Not one other Delta employee anywhere. It got worse. After 6 hrs, we got on a flight to Cincinnati. Then, for our last segment to LAS, Delta changed gates 3 times. After running from one end of the terminal to the other, THREE times, we find our flight was delayed, AGAIN, another hr., which we learned from the monitor. Not one Delta employee anywhere to tell us. No apologies, no explanation. A supervisor told me "Customers have to learn to deal with a big company. Employees don't know about changes before customers. Often customers tell us about delays and gate changes they read about on their Blackberry". He said pilots had to get their info at the gate because of a Delta computer problem. What a way to run a company. They don't care because they don't have to. (BTW, I went to the restroom onboard, only to close the door and find myself in complete darkness! I had to bang on the door to get my husband to open it from the outside so I could see where the handle was!) We finally arrived at our destination at 12:15 am, 14 hours after arriving at the airport. (It was scheduled as a 6 hr. journey) I have avoided American Airlines the last couple of years, and now will avoid Delta. They treat their customers as poorly as they do their employees. Such a shame. Delta had been my favorite airline, but their cuts are too deep.
