I have flown this route twice. Overall a positive experience. Easy to check in Detroit, and the fact that the flight leaves at 10 pm is a huge advantage -- night sleep is easy, plus the airport is pretty empty by then, so short lines. By the time you get out of the airport in Paris (noonish), the traffic is pretty easy also. Checking in at DeGaulle is of course awful, with miles of walking involved, but that's not only for AirFrance. The food on board is good for economy class (better leaving from Paris than from Detroit, what a shock) and the free wine was OK. Beer and after dinner drinks are free also. The first time they crew offered free bagettes, which were actually very good. Overall I thought the crew was friendly and competent. No complaints at all.

On a recent vacation flight, my wife and I were bumped from Lufthansa to Air France due to the Lufthansa pilot strike, but we kept the Lufthansa return flight. We saw an opportunity to compare the two leading European airlines almost back to back. The equipment was the same, Airbus A-330s, but that's where the similarity ended. The AF plane was not well kept. The seats were stained, and the cabin seemed generally dingy. The movie/monitor controls worked badly, and the sound was atrocious. Service was was sparse, and the food was worse. But for the free wine, the meals were almost inedible. I had cold chicken stew with warm salad and bread sitting in fruit syrup. I expected better from the national airline of France. By contrast, Lufthansa served very tasty and generously sized meals and snacks, including a choice of beers, wines, and soft drinks. The cabin crew were unifomly friendly and efficient, and they distributed hot moist towels for freshening up.
