Denver to Jackson is a short hop. Surprisingly, UAL runs their summer evening jaunt on a 757 (and an old one--tube TV's hanging over the aisle), and on my flight there were about 80% empty seats.

Now, we all know that UA's "plus" seating requires extra payment. But on a nearly empty plane there's no need to utilize those extra inches -- most everyone had their own row at the back of the aircraft.

So it was laughable when the jaded-sounding flight attendant used the P/A at least 3 times prior to door close to tell us that for only $19 we could trot back out to the desk and upgrade to EconomyPlus! Then he gave us a stern, stern reminder that nobody is allowed in those seats unless they've paid for them, and the inflight crew cannot upgrade the passengers. Period.

You know, rules are one thing. But at some point an empowered agent looks at the nearly empty flight and just says "who cares?" Let them do what they want.

Anyway, UA continues to un-impress me. I'll fly them when I absolutely have to.

One of these days I hope to try their business class service.
