Check in in Rome was slow. The customs line in Dulles was very long and slow -almost missed flight to Ord. The next flight was "miles" away!
A companion and I had items confiscated at Dulles that were missed in Rome. Not a comfortable feeling.
Flight to Rome was a bit bumpy a we left right after a storm. Smooth later. Uncomfortable seats. Flight to US was very good. 777 - more room.

“Direct to Rome the only way to go”

We recently flew from Chicago direct to Rome on Alitalia. It was approx 9hrs and 20 minutes, received both hot dinner and snack, food was good.
Had English movies & Italian movies, which made the flight go faster.
On the flip side we flew back out of Milan to JFK that was also a 9+ hr flight, then got stalled in JFK. My son travels for business and always told me avoid JFK if possible, was he correct, Customs were a nightmare and eventually had to catch a cab to La guardia to get a flight back to Chicago. When we saw there were several hundred people waiting in line to chat with counter people at JFK, we made the correct decision called Delta and they said we could get out at La Guardia The airports are 11 miles apart and JFK counter people said there was a rain/weather delay for JFK. Hopped in a cab (cheaper that the shuttle bus) and were soon on our way back to Chicago.

Very uncomfortable for a 9 and a half hour flight. The flight had three seats in the middle row and no individual TV's. On the flight home we had 5 seats across the middle and there was much more room and we had individual TV's. Difference was night and day. I watched a couple of movies, snoozed a little and we were home. I guess it was the size of the jets that made the difference.

Good points: Pretty much on time.
Bad points: Plane old, filthy and extremely noisy, food terrible, crew disinterested. Seats so old they were caved in and SO uncomfortable. Oh, and they broke my brand new luggage - pulled out the handle awhile loading/unloading, bent it and it never moved again. Guess what, not insured for that. Would not fly Alitalia to Europe again ever!
